Listed $50 Myer Gift Card on eBay a Few Days Ago, Already at $49?

Hi

I listed a $50 Myer Gift Card on eBay a few days ago for $35 expecting to probably sell it for around $40 or so. The gift card already has a bid for $49 and I'm at a complete loss as to why someone would bother buying a gift card on eBay to save $1.

To be honest I feel like I'm going to be somehow scammed. Does anyone know why someone would buy a gift card like this?

Thanks In Advance!

How is it being delivered? If by Post then they are paying more. What is the buyers rating?

It would need to be over 100 to feel comfortable, and then if they trade that much they wouldn't pay that.

Can't you find a friend who will buy it for 35-40. Dont forget you have ebay fees to pay as well.

I personally wouldnt deal with anyone on ebay with a gift card, too many sharks who can say whatever and you end up with nothing. plus you have to pay ebay as well

    • I just checked his feedback. 1500 transactions with 100% positive feedback. The dude must be legit I just can't get my head around it.

        Personally I would

        STAY AWAY

LOOK at his history of purchases it's probably a hijacked account

        So many gift cards

        • I'm assuming they have an unused eBay voucher or coupon hence they bid $49 on a $50 Myer gift card.

        • @bargin193232222: Conclusion from assuming is dangerous.

If you take that conclusion. Then they have had a lot of eBay vouchers to use up. In the last 27 transactions they have bought/bid on 13 Gift cards if you look at the number after certificates, this tells you the number of bids on the item. And since these are from the listings of their "bids" you can see 11 of the 13 have only one bid - meaning they are the only bidder.

You can't give buyers negative feedback.

Maybe they have a $25 ebay coupon? Add the 5% cash rewards cash back as well.

    • Yeah good thinking.

      • Except, you don't usually earn cash back on gift cards, or when using a voucher to pay for your items..

    I'll take it for $60!

  • Maybe they just want to build up their feedback score.

    • Or have a gift card fetish.

  • +3

Gift cards can be PayPal disputed and the seller will lose out.

    • but the seller has 100% feedback

      • +1

Sellers cannot leave buyers -Ve feedback.

Also accounts can also get hijacked.

  • Yes, I saw people selling Coles Myer $50 cards on eBay, they ended up paying more than $50!

  • Don't forget there are vouchers floating around behind the scenes that might make this more attractive to a buyer. But who knows? Gift vouchers are risky, I've only sold excess movie vouchers on eBay and didn't have any hassles. The majority of people are honest.

Interesting post, OP! Please keep us updated on how this goes!

Standard postage? No wonder you have multiple buyers bidding. You're just waiting to get scammed via Paypal dispute - item not received.

Could OP do registered post? Like flip it around - attract scam bidders with standard postage and then post using registered. PayPal dispute, OP proves item received and the scammer pays more than they should have for a gift card on eBay..

      • I suppose, but eats into the profit margain… Registered post + Ebay/Paypal fees will end up being $10-15.

    • I was more worried about the buyer just saying it's already been used. Having had previous dealings with eBay I know I'd be (profanity) either way.

  • The one thing I would add is that some people have a pay after delivery option within Paypal. Someone who might not have the immediate funds right now to purchase a gift/voucher would bid on your item up to cost price and then not pay until 21 days later. Allowing them to get now and pay later. :)

  • i think there is something fishy about this…

  • just sell it on gumtree i reckon

  • I reckon they might be planning to do a item not received claim with PayPal against you. I once bought a wish gift card of eBay which genuinely didn't arrive. Lodged a dispute and PayPal found in my favour and refunded me.

  • oh nos a 0 feedback buyer is bidding, you're in for trouble.

    • and its $50.90 now…

For future refernce i just tell people who are inclined to get me a gift card to not bother. They are more hassle then its worth and i would rather nothing then a gift card. As someone who is part ocd it shits me when there is a left over amount and i like to be minimilaistic if possible so i hate buying shit i dont need just for the sake of using it up by the expirey.

    Will be interesting this year.

Agreed! I'd much rather tell them that if they must give me a gift card, make it one from the RBA!

I'd rather bank some cash and then pay for things with my own credit card for points, or ING for discount.
