Tandy Outdoor Digital TV Antenna at Dick Smith $10 Save $30 to $69

90

I saw this at Bondi Junction and it showed it was down from 40 bucks to 10, however it looks like an identical antenna but branded dick smith rather than Tandy is selling for 79 bucks (the antenna above the Tandy in the picture. So it's somewhere between 30 and 69 off. Tried to find online but couldn't.

No idea about how good the antenna is but will be testing it out in a week or so.

Edit: having looked at the contents of the box and instructions it's a very easy installation and comes complete with everything you need to set it up (only thing you may want to add is a wall plate for a professional finish).

Tandy? Haha wow, there's a blast from the past!

    • Yeah after they dropped the Tandy name for some shops there was still some stock that was being branded Tandy but not sure when this stopped.

    Tandy Outdoor Digital TV Antenna

    Doesn't seem Realistic…

    • hahah!

  • I puchased one. This antenna is available at most DSE's in Adelaide. Did a quick setup of the antenna and I was able to receive 8 channels relating to channel 9. Will put more effort to see if other channels can be tuned also.

    • What was your situation before getting this antenna?

          I thought that's an oxymoron?

I don't have an antenna plug in my bedroom. Can I chuck this antenna behind the TV or does it have to be "Outdoor".

    • This antenna is an contains an amplifier, which is why it requires a power supply. An amplifier is not normally needed for TV reception in metro areas, it could make the signal too strong for your TV to handle.

You could use it indoors, but un-amplified "rabbit ears" TV antennas cost about the same price, and you won't need to bolt them to the wall.

The main advantage of mounting an antenna outdoors is that you have enough space to mount a directional antenna, and can get a clear "line of sight" signal from the transmitter. Non-directional antennas (like the one in this deal) pick up signals from all directions, including reflected signals from people moving about in the same room as the antenna, and reception will often suffer.

      • The power supply is not required unless the tv/stb/recorder doesn't supply enough power from its antenna socket. I asked the employee about this and he said pretty much everything does nowadays, but they still include the power supply. Mind you he may be wrong, would be good if someone could confirm

$47 on Dick Smith eBay. Looks very similar to the Dick Smith White one - only black and the bends in the loops of antenna aren't so tight.

Great antenna was going to post this few days back but forgot hahaha. Plus you can use it indoors the unit is fairly small (prolly somewhere around 30cm) and seems to work quite well. Much better than the $50 indoor antenna I have. Bargain for a tenner :)

They must have found a bunch of old Tandy stock that was out the back of a warehouse for so many years.

    • Yeah but the funny thing about this post is the same antenna on the shelf next to it in a different box for $79! Obviously they ordered new stock without getting rid of the old stock, and even years later they still haven't got rid of it.

  • Thanks, picked up the last one off the shelf in the Adelaide Store (Gawler Place). Will put it inside the roof of my new house which is due to be completed in April. Hopefully I will get decent reception from it.
