  • I don't think thiiiiis is a deal and if you pay in euros its a bit cheaper.

You get two games in price of one, Squadron 42 (single player) and access to multiplayer (Persistent Universe) which will change soon.

    24Euro = 36AUD $30USD = $41AUD

  • I just get redirected to a grey screen. Meh, At least its free.

    • Which link is not working for you? Are you on a computer or smartphone?

      • im on a mac, seems it my side though. and all of them!

After doing their pax party last year, as much as I want this to turn out well, it seems more cult than game at this point in time.

    • So far they seem to have delivered the goods (pls ref. to linked videos).

Also, at $100Mil in crowdfunding + ~300 employees (& related dependant families), sounds a little bit more than a "cult" (I would simply call it a Business).

My only concern is that there's no equity for backers - but it's just a game (so I suppose that wouldn't/needn't apply).

At the PAX party thing they were showing a video of the FPS section where you entered a space station or similar, talked about it being live, but indications were that it was not being played live, and general talk at the time is that it was a pre-recorded video.
Either way, it was pretty basic FPS play, but the crowd were wetting themselves.

Another video was of driving what was basically a golf cart around a hanger. Even more simple, yet the crowd was all over themselves for something that was less impressive than any basic 3d engine demo.

The people throwing thousands of dollars at ships where all they can do is sit in them inside the hanger, with promises of rewards in a future life. Cult-like.

This was however ~14 months ago, and I do hope it turns out to be a damn good game.

        • That PAX-gig they did in Melb. left me a little bit puzzled too.

'Though now that ILLFONIC is no longer involved, SC seems already something quite different (with the animations being imho quite high level and the lighting updates looking extremely good).

I won't hide I smiled while watching some of their bugs. If you document/share this sort of stuff with the public (many software companies would rather keep it to themselves), I perceive it as a sign of genuinity/humbleness.

Another point I didn't quite like was that sort of game that you play while in low-G. Really?!

Re $$$, I am happy with a Hornet and $30 Aurora Starter package (the Subj. o/t bargain - the rest can be obtained while in-game!).

To me, $30 USD sounds like a low-risk deal that may turn up pretty well!

Star citizen is a 100mil scam* promising everything but at best will be mediocre.

*I don't actually think Star Citizen is a scam, but I will be amazingly surprised if it is actually "completed" (by this, I mean the current featureset they are promising is released in a fully non-beta state) and solid.
I'll also be the first person spending all of my time in it if they deliver…

      I'm assuming you're after the (S)tar (C)itizen (A)dmirer's (M)anual - if that is the case, link is served: https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/79442/t…

If you're after an "all-you-can-eat" kind of experience, then I guess you're right - that's not gonna happen.

That said, CIG had openly declared that Squadron 42 (the "single-player"-experience, covering the whole "game story" arc), is spread in 3-Episodes.

In my books, that reads as "we'll give you a fully working game that satisfies 80% of most players needs".

"IF you keep buying the two other episodes, we'll try & deliver the extras".

But take that with a grain of salt (it's just my "cultist"-opinion).

P.S.: never contradict yourself in writing - you risk of being downvoted.

No, I meant an actual financial scam where Chris Roberts take people's money on the basis that he will develop and deliver a game, but instead squander it but continues to ask for more money with no intention of producing the content he promised. He was passionate, but overambitious, unreliable and has mismanaged the project and its funds.

With $100 million, they literally had enough of a budget to make a dream game, but the bulk of it has significantly been burnt on non-game related stuff (e.g.: Chris's secret wife's film projects).

Squadron 42 was supposed to be the competent part of this huge mess because Erin Roberts was running it, but turns out it's flat out laggy and boring. I want Star Citizen to succeed, but doesn't look like it's going to happen, even with people buying in-game ships for US$15,000.

If you want a space adventure game, get Elite: Dangerous which is actually out.

In my (limited) professional experience with complex hardware/software projects, it's common (yet undesirable) to experience issues/delays. What is your experience ? Have you ever been involved in any professional software development projects?

Re FUD/Dramas (see also https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/3nn3g5/drama_m…), IF CR "took people's money [..] with no intention of producing the content he promised" then you wouldn't see much (if any) progress. I guess that if you browse through their official website updates, you may find a chronological order in which "progress" has been documented (with my point being that something like "progress" is really hard to fake - especially in this time and age that we live in).

Given we are in the realm of assumptions, I choose not to speculate further and acknowledge that you'd rather spend your time on Elite:Dangerous/not-interested-in-this-offer.

  • Yep, there is so much hype for this game that it is setting really high expectations. Hopefully it will be a good game and won't get stuck in a developer blackhole (like so many other games have - Duke Nukem Forever, Fez, The Last Guardian…)

ok ill bear with you…. grrrrrrr

I think this is good, I bought the cheapest supporter pack about a year ago for $45. I haven't played the game yet, just one of those I am happy to support assuming they don't turn into greedy mofos like the team developing Elite: Dangerous. Go have a look at the reviews for the next installment of that game (Elite: Horizons) to see what greedy developers can do to a game.

This "game" is the biggest example of scale creep and whale-hunting ever seen - with a huge amount of cult-like behaviour from those who have bought in (often for thousands or more). It's going to spectacularly crash and burn one day, and it'll be one hell of a show. $30USD (AU$45) for something that will never deliver on what it promises is hardly a bargain. Give your $45 to the Lost Dogs Home or something instead of Roberts and your money will actually go to some use.

If you're even considering wasting your money on this, please do some research first. And not on the official pages, either. There's plenty out there…
