Kindle Touch 6" Wi-Fi 4GB - White $84.15 At Dick Smith eBay With Click & Collect

120
COLLECT15

I was after a basic Kindle as a Christmas present for my folks and this seemed like a decent deal at $84 via Click & Collect on their eBay site. Only appears to be the price for the white version however. Stores such as Bourke Street in Melbourne allegedly had 20 units left this morning.

The code works on the black version, however that's $119, whereas the white is currently discounted to $99 till Sunday. Dick Smith are currently running $20 off on their website but that code doesn't work on Kindles if you're wondering.

I'm unsure about the cashback thing as I don't use it, but worth checking if it also applies.

Original eBay 15% off COLLECT15 deal

In store they also had the Belkin Kindle pack for $15 on clearance (down from $50). It includes:

  • Tab folio case
  • 2 screen protectors
  • Charger (looks like it's just a standard phone charger)

Also official Kindle Powerfast chargers are $10 on clearance at the moment.

Dont have much of a clue.
And does it come with au plug to charge or by usb?
And getting books do you pay for them?
Has there been better deals of this thing or is this a good deal as dont know much about them

It's an eBook reader that's sold by and linked to Amazon (though you can put your own PDFs on it from my understanding). Used to mainly read books that you buy from Amazon. The prices from what I've seen so far are quite good and generally a fair bit cheaper than buying the physical copy.

This is the latest touch model I believe, however there is a more expensive model called the Paperwhite that comes with a back-light. I have one myself, but for your mother not sure the extra cost is worth it. I showed my mom the standard one (the one I put in this deal) in the store and she was happy with it.

Charges via USB so you can use your PC or any standard USB charger (like a Samsung phone one). Dick sells the official Kindle fast chargers for $10 on clearance at the moment.

You buy the books from the Amazon store. I think you can load your own PDF files though. Books are well priced however on their store.

This is the best deal I can currently see. There was a pricing 'mistake' before for $70 and once for $79 when a code applied when it shouldn't. So $84 is not bad at all if you want to get her a Christmas present.

      • back light is useful for reading at night without the light on.

        • Indeed. Would make reading Goosebumps more fun under a blanket fort. I don't care if I'm an adult! :P

        • always wondered, doesn't that defeat the purpose of an eye-friendly ePaper display if you're staring into a light anyway? or is it very very dim

        • +1

@dltra: It's pretty dim and adjustable. So far it's been heaps easier on the eyes than say my iPad when reading in bed.

Also from what I understand, devices like iPads (or anything with an LCD screen) emit a fair bit of short-wavelength light (aka blue light) which has a big effect on the hormone that controls our day-night cycles. e-ink devices, or however you want to call them which are back-lit do emit light, obviously, but it's much less and not as heavy on the blue spectrum.

Or so I've been told! Take it with a grain of salt as I don't know the exact science behind it. :)

        • @cnut: fair enough! makes sense. personally i'd prefer to just leave a reading lamp on if it's night time, same as if i was reading a paperback, but i can understand why some might prefer the device itself to be backlit.

      • I have also purchased one of these as a gift - thanks for the link!

I'd like to give a gift card with it, but I can't find them on amazon.com.au. They're easy to find on amazon.com but the person I'm giving this to will likely struggle with registering it to the US site and conversion rates, etc, so I'd prefer to get a gift card for the Australian site. Do you know if this is possible?

        Thanks

Hmmm, not sure to be honest. The other option is to buy a normal MasterCard/Visa gift card (there's online sites that do it and I think most banks also have them) then give them that. They should be able to use it like a normal credit card on amazon.com.au I'd imagine. In fact, they would probably work on the amazon.com site too.

And it looks like places such as CBA, NAB and even Woolies have them:

        • @cnut: Good idea! Thanks!
