ALPAKA 7ven Bag (Beta Testing)

Hi Ozbargain et al,

Me and my friend have been working on an awesome messenger bag called the ALPAKA 7ven bag for nearly 2.5 years now, and we are nearly ready to launch the product at end of January 2016. Before we launch the product, i just want to get some feedbacks from the public in regards to design and feature, and we thought there is no better place to get feedbacks than from the discerning Ozbargainer.

Background on myself and how the bag concept came about:

  1. I have been a really crazy bag collector over 15 years now, and i currently own around 50 different high quality backpack and messenger bags. As i have around 80 ThinkPad laptops, and i needed different bags for the different situation and clothes i wear. I really loved owning all these bags, however, i would also like to have a bag that i can use everyday of the week if i need to go overseas. I don't really want to bring three different bags with i go travelling.

  2. I was a big Tumi and Crumpler fan before i decided to design the ALPAKA 7ven bag. I loved the Tumi bag for their durability and quality, but the problem was that they were just too formal and not really suited for anything but work. While Crumpler was a breath of fresh air in terms of messenger bag design back in the early 2000s, they combined design and quality, most people in Melbourne knows this brand really well. However, outside of Australia this brand and design is less known, when i was attending important meetings, i was told to have something more appropriate to carry laptop and files, which meant i had to take my Tumi briefcase with me. But i also sometimes like to dabble in bit of photography, and this meant i had to carry a third bag around for the camera/lens and tripod.

So long story short, i thought to myself why not design a bag that is appropriate for work and leisure, but at the same time built of high quality material like Tumi, and it is a bonus if it can also work as a camera bag when needed. A bag that works just as well for messenger style or for carry style. Bascially, a bag that you can use for all 7 days of the week,

  1. After nearly 2.5 years and countless travelling between Australia and China finding manufacturing partner that can design the bag, i finally found a bag manufacturer that was willing to do the prototyping with me, and use the type of materials that i want.

Basics of the bag:

  1. It is done in minimalist black style with special ballistic nylon fabric blend. We used this fabric as it gives a high class feel, allows the bag to be seen as work appropriate, also the fabric is very wear resistant.

  2. We designed the bag to be used messenger style or carry style. So we designed the bag cross sectional shape to be triangular with the handle on the top, this allows the bag to be used as a carry bag even when it is loaded up, not something that most messenger bag on the market are good for. Crumpler removed the carry handle from their messenger bag entirely. The triangular shape means the internal storage volume can vary, and when you are storing much stuffs, the bag front shape is very small and compact. But if you need to store more stuffs it can expand by changing shape.

  3. The corners of the bag and the bag handle is wrapped in high quality italian leather to give a premium feel.

  4. We used high quality German magnetic Fidlock parts on the bag to make using the bag easier, regardless of weather condition or whether you are wearing a glove or not. Fidlock can be easily operated even with gloves on and when it is extremely cold.

  5. There are lot of easy to access pockets on the bag.

  6. I was also thinking of offering a bluetooth beacon to be fitted in the bag that reminds you when you leave your bag behind. Something like Tile.

What i want from the Ozbargain community is feedback on design of this bag, and what bag you use during your week and weekend? What you look for when you buy bags?

Also, we are nearly finalising the final prototypes, and was wondering if anyone may want to test drive the bag before i launch the product. (only have one or two samples that i may able to give out in mid January 2016, contact me on [email protected] if you are interested).

Summary: We designed a bag that you can use 7 days of the week, want community feedback on the design and what you look for when purchasing a bag.

As a photographer/film maker, your bag looks better than the backpack and sling camera bag combo i've been using

    • A question I have been thinking about all day is, you go over the design aspect of the fabrics, latches ect. But what can it actually hold? ie. theres a space perfect for a 13" laptop, 2 pockets perfect for lens, a tripod holder, ect. Thanks

      • It can actually hold quite lot of stuffs, there are lot of pockets. There are two versions to the bag, one is for photographer, and one is not for photographer. The difference is in the removable sleeve.

I will post a video on youtube and some pictures to show you the pockets over the next two weeks.

        • Awesome, I am really interested in trialing it

        • I'd be interested in trialling a non camera version. I'm a mum of two. Had a crumpler bag for the weekends and a backpack during the week for my gym gear.

        • @bluedufflecoat: what do you carry as your gym gear? Because one thing we thought was to design a gym gear sleeve, so it prevents the smell of used gym gear from getting into the bag itself.

        • +1

@lead_org: it's a high Sierra backpack I got for $29. It isn't big enough to store shoes. How does the sleeve work?

        • @bluedufflecoat: one common solution is to use removable smell absorbing padding that has activated carbon granules in them. There is another method, which is more expensive that uses silver nanoparticles coated wires, latter method is more expensive for obvious reasons. Also nano silver particles can cause environmental damages, so they are less frequently used in modern day fabrics.

        • @lead_org: so would the pads need to be replaced?

        • @bluedufflecoat: part of the padding with the carbon granules need to be replaced, but the best one on the market only needs infrequent replacement. I have to look into this for future product.

  • There are already 2 people claiming the prototype bag from Ozbargain.com.

    • have said people replied to this post? also what would the RRP of this product be?

      • +2

Yes, that includes you and bluedufflecoat.

        • Awesome :)

        • @Apple96: the bag will retail between $250 to $299 due to the quality, material and the fact that each one is handmade. Can you tell me what is your usage scenario? and what brand of bags do you use currently?

        • @lead_org: I use a kmart backpack from a few years ago, and a case logic camera bag.

        • @Apple96: i see. What sort of camera do you use? and what sort of camera lens/tripod do you take with you when you do photography?

        • @lead_org: Dslr, normally my 18-200 and a prime.and a cheap but good tripod,

        • @Apple96: i see very interesting. So what do you envision the ALPAKA 7ven bag will help you to achieve? i.e. what sort of functionality do you hope to have as a bag that you use for 7 days of the week?

        • @lead_org: well, having a bag that is comfortable enough to 'wear' 7 days, also not having to swap out bags would be a huge bonus. its part of the reason I've been looking at bags like the Lowepro Fastpack 250 / Photo Hatchback and now yours.

        • @Apple96: i see that was my biggest headache too, and hence why we designed the product.

  • Looks interesting. style is very crumpler. good way of holding the tripod. I do that with my crumpler complete seed. but with a small tripod. this one looks like a full size tripod.

When you have weight in the bag and you carry it via the handle, how does it stay flat like in the photo.

If you need more to test the bag I will be happy to. I use a crumpler complete seed everyday

Depending on how much you want to hold in the bag, if you are just holding a laptop with some stuffs, then the shape of the bag won't change. But if you want to load a lot of stuffs into the bag, then the bag will expand and the shape of the bag will change.

When you are loading a heavy tripod, then there is cabling system that shifts the weight to the straps and not to the bag.

I will have to show you the tripod holding system. Initially, the system was designed to hold design portfolios for design students, but we decided to beef it up and make it able to carry a normal size tripod.

We will be offering 3 more bags for beta testing in the future, it will be announced on our instagram page. If you are interested, you can follow us on instagram.

      • Support for a tripod is probably one of the main things that would get me to buy this bag. When I use a my current camera bag the bag goes a over t when it has the tripod on.

        • +1

properly supporting a tripod was something we thought long and hard before. But to be clear that photographer is one group of people that we target, this bag is really designed for everyday with photography as a hobby.

  • I really like the look of your design, particularly that it can 'stand' when put down. Is there padding for laptop/devices? What's the max screen size?

    • There is padding for the laptop and the main compartment. The photographer version of the bag has more padding to protect the lens and camera body. The max screen size for the normal version can fit a Macbook Pro 15 inches, while the photographer version fits a 14.1 inches laptop.

  • When do you expect the sample to get sent out? I'm back to work now and I've got baby toys in my handbag, from the holidays! Looking forward to transitioning to your bag. Thanks and Happy New Year!

    • Hopefully, we will get the samples by mid Jan to late Jan. There is some delay with the ballistic nylon fabric from Taiwan and the Fidlock parts from Germany.

  • Hi! I've just had a look at this.

    Feedback:
Would be really good to see a tech diagram of features/functions/inside compartments etc possibly with measurements and suggested use. i.e. internal padded pocket 30x20cm ideal for laptop or tablet. Moveable internal pocket 20x20x for camera and so on. Also overall dimensions would be good (

    Is it waterproof? Water resistant?

Personal opinion: I would love to try it but I really don't think I would use it on a regular basis. My shoulders are stuffed to the point where I can't even carry a handbag/shoulder bag to work so I always have a backpack. I have a DSLR with one or two lenses I always take with me when travelling but I don't use a special camera backpack for this as I find the compartments too restrictive (I want to carry a jacket, bottle of water, snacks with me etc and the compartments are always designed for lenses and gear. I find your design to be quite a male design which ordinarily I wouldn't care about but something about the rounded flap I don't like. It's hard to see in the photos where the padding sits at the front/over the shoulder which would also be a determining factor.

For reference I have a small Camelbak for sports, a larger Camelbak backpack for travel, a proper daypack (can't remember the brand right now but it's an awesome daypack and I can use the hiking pole loops to attach a tripod) and then smaller leather backpacks for work/handbag.

Overall it looks like a great bag but would like to see more specs/sizing/pocket info.

    • Hi Tomorrows_angel,

Thank you for the valuable feedback. I will see what i can do with prototype (can't promise anything at this stage) for you. In regards to design, it is very hard to appeal to all market segment and tastes (we are also resource restricted as a startup company in Melbourne), this is our first product and there will be other products that will come. We should have a backpack that is coming in August, which should be more of your taste.

      Regards,

      Jin
