iPhone 5s for $45/Month with Unlimited Calls/SMS + 500MB Data ($1080 over 2 Years) @ Optus

63

For $45/month, this is a tempting deal for someone who already has family members or friends to datashare with Optus.

$45/month = $40 My Plan Plus + $5 handset repayment

$40 My Plan Plus = Unlimited standard national calls + Unlimited SMS/MMS + 500mb data per month.

Edit: People with funny comments should read carefully my initial post. This is only great value if data share with other Optus plan by itself off course not so great.

$45/mo for a 2 year old phone. Where is the bargain here?

    • +3

Plus do you really want to still using a 5s in 2 years time?

      • -2

I'm using a 4s and it meets my needs for everything except battery life..

        • +4

So what you're saying is, it doesn't meet your needs.

        • @Jamiea: nope, just high maintenance

      • +9

Oh yes, that $40/mo plan with 500mb of data looks like a great deal /s

      • +3

It looks like your the exactly type of people they go for with this offer.

        • +1

          lol

  • +8

Get it outright at Telstra for $499. Don't see any bargain…

    • oops my mistake

  • +2

16 gig is painful to use and update. they shouldn't even sell them at this size

    • I second that

  • +6

    How is this a deal?

    • -8

$120 for an iphone 5s seems like a good deal to me

      • +6

Where can I buy it for $120?

They could just say it's $1 but I also have to buy something else for $1079. It's only $1 right?

        • -6

          So for arguments sake…

The cheapest similar phone plan (that I cant find) is $25 a month with vaya… so effectively this is $20 per moth for the phone when compared to that plan.

          24months x $20 = $480.

A recent deal that got quite a few votes was for a $500 iphone 5s https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/220713

So $20 less, and you get to pay it off slowly, meaning you can earn interest on the money in the bank…

maths? or do you just do sarcasm?

        • @moksha:

But you said this phone is only $120, so wouldn't I have $40/m to get a similar plan? :D

That Vaya mobile plan you link has 3x the amount of data.

The other deal is prepaid so you have the option of any carrier you want. Vaya's $18/ m has 1.5GB data although only $650 worth of calls.

How much interest would you earn(after tax) by putting the upfront cost of the other deal into your bank account?

        • @ozhunter: i am going to take my 4 negative votes and run! i should have known better than to get involved in an iphone deal.

Not even a fan… never owned one. ;-)

        • @moksha:
Regardless of what phone it is your way of making it sound like a deal sucks. Saying its only $120 phone.
You sound like a used car salesman.
"Trust me, you are getting a good deal"

  • +1

Whilst I agree that the phone is old, and also, that there are better plans around for $40/month, I think that it will definitely be good for some (e.g. perfect for my parents)

Plus- re the $499 outright with Telstra, if you are okay with a $40/month plan for this, the handset is $5/month x 24, so $120.

To me, the worst part is just being locked in for 24 months, when even the last 3 months has seen a massive increase in what you can get in prepaid / no lockin contracts.

    • +1

The $40 My Plan Plus only includes 500MB/m which is pitiful.

      • +1

Yep, agreed. Hence the note that it will be good for some (and definitely not all).

    • +1

I dunno why you've been negged so a +1 from me;-)

Comparing to Telstra you can get this 'phone for $55 per month….. it might be a better network and comes with 1Gb data but is not unlimited as far as calls & text is concerned. As I have Optus cable I can in theory also get a $10 discount so it could cost me only $35 a month. Yes you can get better deals if you BYO mobile, even with Optus, so yes the 'phone is not costing $5 per month but is being subsidised by the plan…. but it's still a deal in my opinion. Maybe not the best deal out there, but still a deal.

Looking at it another way, the 'phone itself is selling for around the $500 mark (I know). So if for whatever reason you wanted it, then it would cost $20 per month to buy it, not taking into account interest etc. So for $25 per month (or $15 per month if you have another eligible Optus service) you're getting unlimited calls/text plus enough data for a lot of people out there. Again, not for me or I suspect for a lot of the ozbargainers out there, but yeah it could be an ok deal for some.

      • Yeah, not sure why I'm getting negged- I thought that the thinking was fairly sound. Anyways ho-hum.
        Thanks for the +1

        • +1

No problem. As an aside, if you can fork out the $$ for the mobile outright, and are happy with the Optus network, then probably better off with the Amaysim unlimited plan - $24.90 for unlimited calls/text plus 1Gb data. Effectively the same price, but more data and no 24 month lock in.

    • You assume a plan.. Plenty of people who have worked out the best methods for prepaid that gives better value than your numbers/

  • isn't it bad form to have the older iPhone than the latest? ;) lol

    • +2

Nah. I like the 5s the best even when I had the 6. Sold that and bought another 5s because better size with same features.

  • -1

iPhone 7 will be out soon

    • +2

      soon = 10 months
      iPhone 7 = $2000

    • +4

How soon? Any bargains? More info.

      • How soon?

        2016

  • should be on a $30 plan..

    • absolutely, even $30 optus prepaid has 1.5GB data

  • In conclusion. No deal!

  • +3

Optus is being deceitful (surprise surprise).

$45 a month for the above plan includes: unlimited text, unlimited phone, and 500mb data (and the phone).

But on their Sim Only deals they openly advertise

$40 a month includes: unlimited text, unlimited phone, and 10Gb data!

However they still have the nerve to try and sell the first deal by saying its only $5 difference per month for the phone. It's not $5 because the data is not the same (hence the plan is NOT THE SAME). The real price of the phone component would be much more (and probably well above what its actually worth).

Neg because this is not a deal, and the retailer is falsely claiming the value (and sucking people in as shown above).

    • Agreed. Negged for the same reason.

  • oops

  • +1

I feel angry just looking at this deal.

Maybe I should say angry at optus offering this deal.

But again, poster posting this deal…..seriously?

    • What a shite reception for my initial post. Can't believe the kind of people on this forum 😀
Telstra deal for $499 phone outright. Someone mentioned Amaysim for $24.95 for 1gb/month. For 24 months it is $600. Ie $1099 in total including phone. But you have to upfront cash for phone plus only 1gb/month. Yes of course you're not locked in to a long contract.
However if you read my post carefully I mentioned this is good value if data share with other Optus plans. Eg Optus $100 for 20gb/month, you can data share a good portion of data if you want to.

      • Ivan, don't take it so personally mate (even though lovepub's comment was a little unfair). I know it hurts when you take the time to publish a deal for everyone, and its not positively received. But thats just the way things go sometimes.

Thank you for taking the time to post. This one didnt work out, but no reason why the next one wont.

I hear what you are saying regarding data sharing… but thats limiting the deal to a very select few people. Most wouldnt be in that particular situation, so the deal as advertised isnt attractive.

And just to clarify something (because you're new), you need to remember that when someone negs your deal they arent negging you.
Different story with individual comments though ;).

  • Ivan needs to keep his OzBargain training wheels on a bit longer yet. Kudos for trying though. The good will was there, unless of course he works for optarse.

  • Nope. I use Vodafone. Tried getting them to price match Optus but they refused.

    • I was under the impression that if you call their retentions team they will match Optus price?

      • They gave me $5 discount on their $60/month iPhone 5s plan only.

  • buy one outright or 2nd hand then then buy a whole lot of Telstra starter kits for $5 at Coles or Woolies.
