Frozen/Thawed Giant Raw Ocean Tiger Prawns $28/Kg @ Coles

100

Hi all,

I have been looking out for prawns for Christmas. Saw this from my Flybuys eDM, went down to my local Coles to have a look and those prawns are pretty massive. It's $28/kg for the massive Tiger Prawns, and $18/kg for Large Banana prawns at my local Coles. YMMV. I usually get Large tiger prawns for about $30/kg at a fish place down at the Gold Coast for special occasions. Not much of a discount, but saves me petrol driving down to the Gold Coast.

I know they are big, because this is the first time my wife said to me, "OMG, that's so big!". :)

Merry Christmas, or happy holidays, whichever you are happy with.

Forgot to say, I have also checked that the prawns are Product of Australia.

    "to me" he said.

Yes, let's just say the comment I was referring to was in general, not specifically limited to prawns. Lol.

Are they sustainable sourced not using child/forced labour?

    • +3

Yeah local or overseas? If overseas don't touch them.

So those kids can become unemployed?

      • Mate, you can rest easy, the prawns are product of Australia. I do check these things nowadays, seafood is like filters of the sea, accumulating all the heavy metals.

    • From the pic, the prawns are unpeeled. I'm guessing that it would be unrelated to the recent slave labour news articles.

  • Fresh just taste so much better.

    • ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • Freshly peeled by Thai child slave labourers doubly tasty.

  • A wholesale operation (http://www.nhan.com.au/contact-us/) in Regents Park, Sydney retails frozen large Aussie ocean tiger prawns for $20/kg or $90 for 5kg box.

We bought from there 2 weeks ago - those red prawns (as opposed to black tiger prawns which are farmed) were fantastic. You have to ask staff to get them straight from freezer as they don't thaw stuff, which I think is better anyway.

    • How big is large though? From what I have seen at the supermarkets, they have the "large" prawns, then they have the "jumbo" or "giant" prawns, which is about twice the size of a the "large" prawns. The normal large tiger prawns sells for about $22/kg at my local Coles. These $28/kg ones are called Giant Tiger Prawns. The "large" ones are about as fat as my thumb and 3 times as long as my thumb, the "giant" ones are probably as fat as my toe and about 1.5 times the length of the large prawns.

      • Which toe?

How much manual labour have you done? :p

        • Sorry forgot to say it is my big toe.

I didn't do any manual labour. My wife did all the work. Did that answer your question or am I being totally inappropriate? Lol.

        • @geek001: So you have gloriously soft & small feminine-like hands/fingers? =)

        • @Lukian: Ahh… now I understand the reason for asking.

TBH, yes.. I admit I do have kinda feminine-like hands.. I work in IT. Size-wise, I would say a little above average. ;) Although, they have grown a bit rougher since I did my house reno this year… me thinks.. time to apply some moisturiser.. Lol.

@geek001: time to apply some moisturiser.. Lol.

It rubs the lotion on the skin or else it gets the hose again

      • Prawn sizing is counted by the number of prawns in a kilo. Jumbo or Giant prawn normally size 25 and below (25 pcs or less/ kilo), large is between size 26-32 (26-32 pcs/kilo). You can count it yourself next time when you buy a kilo of prawn, so now you now precisely if those prawn are Jumbo/Giant or just large. Also another thing to remember, all frozen prawn are normally dip in cold water before freezing to increase its weight, to something like 10% heavier.

  • I buy the prawns in the 5kg or 3kg boxes from Whoolies. I then decide when to defrost them.
It always surprises me how "old" the prawns are ( date on the box): 5-11 month.
Would be interesting to know the date of the box, where they defrost "for your convenience" the prawns.
Coles's prawns mostly look terrible in my local shop. the legs already blue-ish.
Guy at Whoolies ( don't say which ), gets paper of about 4.5Kg on the scale instead of the box,
because box + prawns is about 5.2 kg. so I get a discount of about 10%.
So I'll be heading there next Friday.

  • It's gonna be 34 on Christmas Day in Melbourne btw
