Sydney in Mid January 2016

Hola,
As a kind-of last minute thing, I'm travelling to Sydney in mid Jan (15th to 18th) 2016. Trying to find a good hotel deal… I've tried LastMinute/Wotif "Secret" Hotels, Agoda, Hotels Club, Hotels.com, etc… all the regulars. Airbnb mostly sold out in my price range, which is about $500-550 total for the three nights (i.e. $180 per night MAX).
Any suggestions?
Also any other bargain deals for Sydney at this time/ general Sydney frugal tips?
Cheers
Mr John Citizen

EDIT: I've booked a CBD hotel now. Any general Sydney bargain tips for a weekend up there? Manly ferry Sunday sounds good. Restaurants? Vouchers? Etc… Thanks!

  • we recently stayed at Napoleon on Kent. they are serviced apartments, not a daily service motel. room has a kitchenette and en-suite (they also do shared bathroom rooms for less). good location in NE corner. minor issue is construction across road but it didn't keep us awake. probably in price range (we booked a package). and yes, it is under a road. easy walk to darling harbour, circular quay.

  • mate sydney is expensive all year around. the general country of australia is, but i digress.

you should stick to chinatown for food though.

  • and if you go to manly on the ferry ($15 round trip), the Manly Bakery had nice filled rolls and deserts at 'normal' prices. it's on Sydney Rd, which is akin to a mall (no cars)

    • Thanks! Thinking of doing the ferry trips. I think I read that they are capped price with the Opal card on weekends… anyone know about this?

      • SundayFunday - every type of government transport (train/bus/ferry) is capped at $2.50 for the whole day! Manly ferry is a must do in Sydney :)

        • Thanks! Sunday ferry ride it is :)

        • +1

          @Mr John Citizen:
While you're at Manly, Shelly Beach is a must visit. Clear blue waters and an awesome place to snorkel.

  • Seeing some great rates on Travelzoo for the Seasons Apts at Darling Harbour- http://www.travelzoo.com/au/hotels/australia/city-hotels/-11…

Otherwise, I highly recommend the Sydney Harbour YHA- you can get a private room in The Rocks for under your bugged and their rooftop is amazing!

    • I've looked at that YHA. Very tempting… the rooftop looks fantastic!

  • How about staying in Bondi Junction ? It's 10 minutes by train to Sydney CBD and there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants. Bondi Beach is only 15 minutes away by bus.
Wotif.com has Quest Serviced Apartment for your 3 nights for $564.

    • +1 to this idea. Do you really need to be in the CBD? The trains here are really quite good, so as long as your hotel is near a train station, you can be in the city in 10-15 mins depending on where you stay.

      • You're right, I probably don't need to be in the CBD, but I think I'd prefer it. I have events in the CBD on all nights (Fri-Sun) and I think I'd like to walk to them to avoid taxi/train costs.

How long could/should I wait before booking? Anytime before Christmas? Assuming the prices will only get more expensive in the fortnight leading up to my dates. Happy to wait at least a few days and see what deals might pop up.

        • School Holidays - it's unlikely to get cheaper unfortunately so I'd book sooner rather than later. Yes, there may be a deal come up, but there may not as well.

Grab an Opal card at a 7-11 for the train/bus use. Trains are fast and cheap. If it's late, Uber is good in Sydney - just make sure to find a voucher if it's your first time using them (TRY20SFMF will get you $20 if you don't have a better one)

        • @toristo:
Thanks, I've booked. You're probably (hopefully) right about it not getting any cheaper.

Opal card - great. Hope it's cheaper than Myki…
Yeah, I'll be setting up Uber on my girlfriend's phone to use some vouchers (I already use Uber here in Melbourne).

  • Highly recommend Meriton Serviced Apartments. Much nicer than hotels at that price range, I use them when I travel to Sydney for work.

I just got an email from them, they have a great sale on from 8 Jan - 31 Jan.

Their Zetland apartments start from $115/night, and they are ranked #9 on TravelAdvisor for hotels in Sydney.

    See deal here:

    • Thanks. The Zetland apartments look really nice, and good price, but a little bit further out than I want to stay. I'd probably like to stay north of Central Station (could be tricky given my budget).

  • Hi Can you please let know which hotel you booked? and did you get a decent deal ? I am looking to travel as well …end Jan..

    • I ended up getting a good deal at the
Sheraton on the Park. Think it was a one day only type of special.

  • Any tips for this coming weekend in Sydney? Things to do, places to see, etc. I'm in town for Dirty Three at Sydney Festival on Friday night.
