No scar mole removal?

I've a mole right in the middle of my forehead and another on the cheek with few hairs, both are benign according to my GP. But I would like to remove those since they are bothersome to me.

Apparently, I've to either go through surgey by a plastic surgeon or laser removal by a dermatologist. Surgery would cost me thousands (~1500$ at least) without private health insurance and laser is relatively cheap (less than 500$). But I would be happy to pay for plastic surgery if its really scarfree. So which one of these routes should I go to have NO scars left on my face after the removal and will be future proof (no recurrance)?

You will never have no scars, cutting through dermal layers will give you a scar. Your best bet is with an experience plastic surgeon if you want the smallest scar possible, and that will cost a lot of money.

Do not go overseas for under-qualified surgeons performing surgery in dangerous environments. While this surgery doesn't have a mortality rate associated with it, you can't fix a mistake on your forehead. You need to get it done right the first time, by the best doctor you can afford. Good ones will have big waiting lists.

    • Yes, I got an appointment in early March 2016, just for consultation. Surgery will take another 2 months wait should I choose to follow through.

    • he could always go overseas for qualified surgeons who perform surgery in safe environments…
might end up costing around the same , yet he gets a trip out of it !

Going overseas for medical tourism is so stupid. You get what you pay for.

        • you get what you pay for here as well.
yes some of the horror stories are worse in those countries , but if you do the research go to a reputable surgeon , you can get quality services.
even here in Australia you get varying standards between the top end and lower end of any medical treatment.

        • @Settero:

You know what surgeons here spend a lot of their time doing? Fixing up mistakes from medical tourism. The standards are shocking in South East Asia. You are speaking absolute tosh Settero, and you shouldn't be advocating reckless practices without understanding the dire repercussions involved with medical tourism, including countless deaths, heinous injuries, reoccurring medical problems, the list is endless. As I said, while there is no risk of death in this operation, there is certainly a very high risk of disfigurement if you go overseas for the procedure. You would be crazy to allow some hack to work on your face, when you have the best qualified doctors in the world in Australia.

        • @thorton82: Woah - a bit OTT there.
Yes, sometimes there are problems with medical tourism. Sometimes there are problems with local medical procedures.
Plenty of people have had their procedures done in lower cost countries and been very happy. Some of those procedures are done by highly trained and well qualified medical professionals. And sometimes it all goes horribly wrong.
Like with most things, you have to consider the risks.

@BigTed: The only people who have cosmetic work done overseas are complete morons.

        • @thorton82: Woah!!! Calm down tiger!

I think you don't understand the concept of labor cost and materials cost. A top private hospital in a SE country can match all your comfort and safety you'd get here plus more and still be cheaper.

          @shadowarrior: Absolute rubbish.

        • Please stay on topic everyone.

        • @bargainaus: I've told you the facts, there is no other solution. You can't remove a mole without creating a scar, and the best course of action to minimise scaring would be to see a good plastic surgeon. There is no other solution.

        • @thorton82: Laser claims to be scarless.

          Source?

        • @bargainaus: yeah ok, go and drive to the laser clinic in your water powered car.

        • @thorton82: Damn thorton. I think you need to buy that Hendricks gin from the deal couple of days back and calm down. :)

@shadowarrior: I know right. My point is, this guy needs to see the expert and not take advice on a budget focussed website. Your health is not something you skimp on, Hendricks gin is.

  • My husband has had a heap removed from his face all pretty good. He goes to a surgeon who only charges $50 (name is Dr Louie and he's in Sunnybank in Brisbane). The botched jobs I have seen from people who get it done from their GP are horrific. Dr Louie is a very small and precise stitcher and does a heap of tiny stiches and it always heals very well. He is just a surgeon, not a plastic surgeon.

Not sure where you live, but do your research and you will find someone. We found Dr Louie because he was recommended by the mole screening clinic doctor as the best one to go to.

He's not a surgeon if he is called Dr.

      • He might just be a GP who specialises in / is good at minor surgery and mole removal. I know one such person in Perth. I agree that I wouldn't let just any GP remove a mole if I cared about the cosmetic results, as the results can differ considerably.

  • I've had moles removed from my face using laser with great success. I went to http://www.gmccosmedical.com.au/

No reputable doctor will guarantee you no scarring, it will depend on your skin type and individual circumstances. My skin has healed very well, I can see very faint pink marks where it was removed but other people wouldn't be able to tell. My skin tends to heal quite well though anyway.

    • How was the cost? I'm from Canberra.

I've had cancerous and non cancerous growths on my face revolved by a dermatologist and plastic surgeon in Melbourne recently as my very experienced GP said no one else should attempt to remove such things from the face.

Both have stated there is no such thing as scar free removal, however I have been referred for laser in a few months if I wish to have scars removed with fraxel or c02 laser which I have been told will remove the scar. The non cancerous growths have healed remarkably however and I probably won't bother with the laser but a cancerous growth has amazingly straight stitch work but is quite noticeable on my cheek so I might eradicate it. Going to give it a few more months to heal and fade first though. Was quoted $1300 per session for whole face fraxel with 2-3 sessions required and $500 for the c02 if the fraxel doesn't remove it all.

    • Let me know how fraxel or c02 laser turns out for you, I'll have scars left the way I see it.

  • I've had moles removed via surgery (by a plastic surgeon, on my face and on my arm) and laser (elsewhere on my body). Surgery left scars. The surgeon can try to minimise the size of the scar, make it fit in with your facial folds etc but there will definitely still be a scar, and it will be bigger than the mole. Laser didn't leave a "scar" as such for me, it left a lighter patch where the mole was (exactly the same shape as the mole). Much less noticeable than a scar.

As people have said above, results differ from person to person. It depends on your skin type, how well it heals etc. Generally the face heals well as it has good blood supply, and doesn't stretch as much as other parts of the body.

  • @bargainaus Hi, I wondered if you found a good place to do it yet? i have heaps of moles on my face as well and I'm kind of lost :)

    • +1

I just returned from my cosmetic surgeon to remove the bandage today. :) I did it Canberra.

But I think it will not be scar free… :(

      • oh awesome :D , hopefully it'll be indistinguishable in a year time!!
Would you mind if I ask the fee for doing it? I have like 20+ small moles on my face a big one :( I can't tell how much i hate seeing my self in the mirror.

Just want to save up a little bit before i can get rid all or most of them ;(

        • +1

I had 2 removed and costed around 1500$ so far, will get back something from Medicare but not much.

Fees = 1st consultation fee + removal fee + surgery room fee + follow-up consultation if required.

The total cost do not depend on the number of moles, surgeon will assess the situation and make a quote, which is unlikely to be too high if there were fewer moles.

        • @bargainaus: Thank you so much <3
