Mobile Speed Camera by Police - NSW

Hey folks have a question regarding those mobile speed cams that the Police hold up opposite incomming traffic,

I was travelling south on the Anzac Bridge yesterday (towards Five Dock) when I belatedly noticed a cop standing with the mobile speed in his hands pointing it at oncoming traffic from the side of the road. I quickly looked at my speedo and I was doing 72 whilst the speed on the bridge is marked 60.

I drove past his unit casually expecting him to get in the car and give chase, OR jump infront of my car asking me to stop which neither of happened.

I told my wife in the car that if neither of the 2 happened, I was effectively missed or let go.

She reckons that he operates like a static speed camera and will just issue the fine in the mail.

I know what you're getting for Xmas.

      a puppy?

  • jump infront of my car asking me to stop

LOL, for you going at 72… i doubt that would've happened, else you would've added another conviction to your speeding

Anyway, that happened to me once, but I didn't see a speed sign that said 60 anywhere along the road. Always thought that bridge was 70… Anyway, I haven't received anything so far and this happened last double demerit period, which was about a month or two ago?

For your marriage sake its best you just nod and say "Yes dear".

Your hunch is correct. The police officer was using a LIDAR gun. You can shop for them online and read the specifications. Am pretty sure that most of them do not have built in still camera's. LIDAR guns are generally designed to be light so that the arms of the operator won't get tired.

In-car video is rarely used for a speeding conviction. Video is primarily used as proof for other offenses eg. wreckless driving, resisting arrest…

    I'd count your lucky stars.

12km/h over the limit is an expensive $260 fine. I'd rather donate that money or use it for a track day.

Mobile speed cameras are an outsourced function (Source) and look like this so if it was a Policeman who was holding a handheld device (Lidar) and he didn't give chase you should be fine.

OK thanks for clearing it up.

Yes it "wasn't" the mobile cameras mounted on the Utes/Cars.

It was a police officer with the LIDAR pointing towards me.

If he didnt pull you over there and then you're home free !
Your speedo is probably wrong too by at least 5 km/h so you were probably only doing around 67.
The NSW police have a tolerance so you were obviously below the threshold.

They were probably collecting data to gauge the speed of drivers in and around that area, or possibly something to dowith training. The way you've described things it seems unlikely that enforcement was the intention there.

  • Had the same thing happen to me just a bit further down Victoria Rd on the bridge near Birkenhead Point on a public holiday!
I also expected him to give chase but nothing came of it.

Yep…mind you, I was the first car in a batch of cars coming across the Anzac Bridge, so he no-doubt saw me, I looked at my speedo and slowed down. I then blinked and expected to see some flashing lights but none.

  • jump infront of my car asking me to stop

Because that's what they do… they just jump in front of speeding cars…

Brother got caught by one a couple of years ago. He received a fine in the mail.

    • Was he in NSW if not different rules can apply

      • See I previously was caught doing 75 in a 60 zone, the police caught me on the LIDAR way before I saw him down the hill. So he just jumped in the middle of the road and waved his hands.

This guy on the Anzac bridge just did nothing, so I was little apprehensive and expecting something in the mail?

The only ones that get you a ticket in the mail in nsw are the cameras on a post, or the mobile unit in a vehicle marked as a speed camera, and with warning signs out.

If there is a police man hanging onto the device they will have to stop you to give you a ticket.

You got lucky, he was probably counting on the next car over the hill to have a higher speed.

    • Cool thanks for that…phew!
I started stressing over that $200 waste of money coming my way
