The boxing tower in the same catalouge is also exellent value and works well punching and kicking (i use it for muay thai)

    • you are right, The boxing tower is awesome, great cardio workout

  • If i can get myself to BigW befor they sell out i may just pick myself up one of these :) just lifting it out of the store and to your home in itself is a workout!

    • Get the store person to put it into a trolley for u!!! ;)

or alternatively ask to pick it up from loading dock! :P

      • Some stores will only let you get this sort of stuff thorugh the loading dock, which is actually a good idea except waiting for them to get organised :)

Judging by the number you see on nature strips (for rubbish collection), I'd say for many
Workout 1 - Lift in/out of car. Cool down by setting it up.
Workout 2 (2yrs later) - Carry from garage to nature strip ;-)

      • so true :)

      • +1

True. Fitness equipment always get people motivated enough to get their wallet out. Alas their motivation falls after that…

  • Do you need a station wagon?? Can it be folded/stored away?

    • It'll fit in the back seat of a commodore sedan… I bought one of these during their last sale. A smaller car may have trouble getting it to fit though, but you should be easily able to get it in the back seat of a large family sedan.

  • Oh man, 30kg? An infant can lift that. Does BigW sell individual weights? Also, what's the max weight rating for these bars?

    • Plates usually work out to be just under 3$/kg (somewhere between 2.5-2.8).. They're generally the most expensive part of the equipment.

      • Thanks for your reply. Would I need to go Workout World or some other place to get them? Add $100 for another couple 20kg weights. Not that bad.

        • Mine bought last year, and the bar looks not as straight as before with only 40kg weight on it. Not sure if it could survive through 50kg or more.

        • Big W sells them, as do most other major retail outlets. I was coincidentally looking online for a bench a few days before this catalogue was out, so found that the vast majority of prices seem to be around that 3$/kg mark.

I'm sure the bench will be fairly sturdy, but the bar on the other hand may not be as solid — there are cheap olympic bars rated at 500 pounds that you can get for about 80$.

  • I just called Big W, apparently you can pick up the goods now, comes with 36kg, asked about weight limit, she wasn't sure due to her saying you shouldn't put more weights on then(>36kg). I would use my own bar but hopefully it's not going to fall apart after a few months on top of me.

    • Mmm I've had mine for a few years with no trouble > 36kg. Is it me or does the bar look bent in the picture with the amount of weight on it? Either way, I think standard bars are able to sustain more than 36kg.

  • +1

I really wouldn't trust this with something like 70kg+

What if the thing buckles and the bar falls on your head ? Don't skimp on safety.

    • +1

Given the variance in population weight, I'd imagine the bar could support at least 70kg. Otherwise, what's to say some fatty doesn't just sit on it and break the damn thing?

  • I had a smaller Sports brand bench, came with a hollow 2 part bar, interlocking.
I wouldn't go higher than 50kg on the bar, if its the same one.

Maybe use this to learn form and see if you enjoy lifting but hit up eBay and get an Olympic bench + weight combo for about $160 and go from there.

  • +1

remember when i started benching it took about a month to hit 50kg weights. so this thing might last a month or two. I suggest ppl with a budget get them selves a proper 2nd hand bench + 100kg weights on ebay for slightly more.

    • What should I search for on eBay?

  • How much does the boxing tower usually go for?

    • I'd like to know this too.

    • +1

dunno but i couldnt find anything decnt or comparable for less than 400.00 its still cheap but then depends how you use it , the bag is pretty good quality and the stand is exellent especially with the suspension strap on the bottom so the bag doesnt swing out

  • Yeah I think this bench is more of a entry level setup, though I can't find any Olympic bench + weight combo for about $160 on ebay.

  • I assume the bench would be of reasonable quality tho? Able to do free weights if the bar is not your thing?

  • I'll have a look after work today. Now that I can look at a bigger picture, the weights look like sand filled, the bench looks like it's made of 8mm mdf/ply. haha

  • Let's ALL not go rushing to BIG W; Target - has buried in its catalogue on page 16 - http://target.dynamiccatalogue.com.au/portal/embedproductlist__LeftCategoryColumn?CatalogueID=12658402374826&tab=list&N=4294924703+45&Ns=OfferOnPage|0 - some very good fitness equipments. NOT AVAILABLE in Melbourne CBD..

Hi - I have just added to OZBARGAIN the link to Target Offer

  • I went past big w today, spoke to some absolute moron, bench wasn't on display, she didn't know what was going on, I sign I reckon not to buy.

    • +1

A fairly good reason why it may not have been on show yet was that the catalogue starts today (Thursday), not Wednesday - when you went in.

  • I went to my local Big W store today (Whitfords in Perth) and went to buy this. Couldn't see any on display, so asked someone in the area. They told me that I had to go to the front desk to pay for it and then pick it up from the back dock. Which is what I did.

Picked it up (fit easily in the back seat of my commodore sedan), but haven't actually opened it or set it up yet. Will do that tomorrow.
Comes with 80lbs weights (4x 15lbs/6.8kg; 2x 10lbs/4.5kg) which is actually 36kg in weights rather than 30kg as it was advertised.

Box weighed a total of 61kg, which means that the bench is 26kg. By my guesses, the actual bench itself can't be all that bad if it weights that much just for the frame.

They also had all the specials out tonight rather than tomorrow. I'm still tossing up whether to go buy the boxing tower or not…

  • any idea if you can laybuy these? I wanna buy it tommorow but can't fit it in the corolla :(

    • Yes.

  • Double Qantas points at Big W this week if using your Everyday rewards card that is linked to your qantas card also buy anything from this catalogue to get 100 bonus points

  • Plenty at my local there was one set up in the gym section and in another aisle about 30 metres away there was a stack of them (8) would have bought it except have arm problem and cant lft anything

    • Too much internet surfing will do that ;-)

  • This thing was a bugger to put in the car myself, if you are planning on getting one, please bring a friend or kindly ask a staff member to help u lift it into the car. dont break your back!. Picked one up at stafford city this morning, there weren't many left on the floor (10) so i advise to call in beforehand to make sure u can get one :)

    • Should easily fit in a hatchback with one seat folded down
  • you can laybuy it. i did. it costs $5.

i bought mine around 6months ago during the last sale whenever it was.
the bench is basic. it says no more than 70kg in weights. but i have a solid 6ft bar and 75kg on it right now which i bench + my 80kg weight so its strong enough.

the 2piece bar and plastic weights are useless. i wouldnt bench with it. i do use it for dead lifts and curls but nothing over my head with that pos bar.

for $98 its worth the bench. but i recommend you buy a solid spin lock bar and plate weights to replace the 2piece hollow bar.

    • Layby fees are $2.

      Minimum deposit is 10% + $2 fee. (So.. 9.8 + 2 = 11.8)

      • maybe now. or in states other than qld but they charged me $5 only and i told them ill pick it up that night with a wagon

        • They've been that price for at least 7 years in Victoria.

  • any idea how much the bar itself weighs? (is it included in the 36kg of weight?)

  • Anybody been using this one after the sale, about to get one just want to see if the bar has held up etc ?

    • A friend picked it up and it held up fine. Apparently the bench will support 200-250kg. (It was written somewhere)
