And where would you find the serial number on the ipad?
It's located on the back of the iPad or you can go to Settings > General > About
https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT204308
Or check out this page, pretty comprehensive descriptions of each type of iPad, so hopefully will be of help: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201471 .
To avoid making it obvious, you could probably ask for the serial number to check "if their warranty is still valid" or something I guess! And if they ask why, you can probably come up with some story :P
OMG, some older ipads have exploding battery issues. Quick, what is your serial. Oh, no this affected MD785X/A er…revision c
Cheers guys
Can ask them to measure it, saying you want to give them a spare cover, ipad 1-4 were similar size
The airs are alot thinner and smaller

Is this newer than mine ipad 4th gen by what i can see there one being newerso when you have say a case with built in keyboard and ssys for ipad 2-4 gen this is older ioad right?and there one is newer right and not be suitable? They said there model number is Mc982b/a is this an ipad air or on what i think i seen ipad 2 2nd gen surely not as she purchased it new after we did and have ipad 4th gen,i thought they would have had a newer model.
Im confused as to what ipad this relates toMine is model md510b/a so what's the newer model and if say i have a zagg case that says ipad 2 to 4th gen is this going to be ok for both as confused as to what there ipad is.

edit: I think I misinterpreted your post, is it that you want to gift an iPad to a family member but they already have one?
