Got a Call from Telstra - Offering Me a Free Samsung Galaxy S6 if I Go on a Casual Plan - Too Good to Be True??

Hi,

I am currently on the Freedom Plus after just switching over from Cap Encore after the recent cap changes… With Encore I would spend usually $40 a month altough sometimes I got away with $30 and other times I had to spend the $50 (for the $49 data pack). With Freedom Plus I don't know yet but it looks like I might be able to wing it on the $30 recharge but likely will need $40 usually.

Just received a call from Telstra where she tried to get me on a 2 year plan - nothing new under the sun, I politely refused. However after refusing a couple more times to her offers (which were getting better but still no where near good enough to entice me to go on a plan) she asked what is stopping me and I said I don't want to be shackled to a plan for 2 years. So she takes a minute "to check" and comes back with the following offer:

$65 p/m - Casual
Unlimited Call and Text
4 GB of data, $10 per extra GB after (<- this is where the plan sucks)
And included - a free Galaxy S6 64gb

I forgot to ask but I am guessing no included international credit (I do use it occasionally but not a huge deal for me)…??

This to me sounds too good to be true - I will be able to go back to prepaid the next month leaving me with a nice shining new phone.

Thoughts? Anyone else ever been offered something like this?

You'll probably have to pay for the phone if you go off the plan but I'm not sure. I'd get something in writing for sure.

    • I asked, she said I can terminate with no penalties and keep the phone. She promised it will all be in writing.

      • Well just get the plan with the free phone and go back to pre paid. The only down side I can see to this is a possible mark on your Credit History.

Lol that won't happen. The plan will be casual but there will be a MRO attached that will be subsidised over 2 years so long as the plan and service remains active.

        • So what will happen if I exit the plan? And how can I check that? Will it be enough to record my next conversation with the lady?

        • @ory_zm:

No, recording the conversation won't be enough.

        • @ory_zm: It won't happen mate. They arnt handing out free phones. You risk getting a bad credit rating if you try disputing the debt from the ETC as it will take some time to resolve the dispute and then will simply conclude with the resolution of fees waived so long as phone returned.

    Device Payment Contract
You may purchase a new eligible handset to use with your Plan, and pay off that handset over 12 or 24 interest-free monthly payments with a Device Payment Contract. If you cancel your Plan or Device Payment Contract before
the end of your Device Payment Contract term, you’ll need to pay the balance of any remaining handset payments. Source

So, it's likely you're going on a $40 Casual plan, with $25pm handset payments. This shows the 'current' plans.. maybe this $50 + $15 payment plan…

Who knows what they're 'offering', but I'd want to get all the information before signing.

  • That's a good amount of data for the price and pretty surprising coming from Telstra. They have by far the best network speeds and coverage, so you'll probably get your money's worth. I prefer to just buy the phone outright and buy cheap $30 prepaid starter kits.

  • 4G good but nothing Amaysim does not hand out free or $5 every other month.
Oranges and Apples. Watch those device payment contract.
