I've been given a $900 apple store gift card through work. Originally I was going to upgrade my laptop with it, but starting to think the cash would be better. As far as i know, Apple do not pay out the gift cards, so what's the best method to get the cash value. Thinking to just buy an iPhone and then on-sell, but is that the best way? Surely I'd lose 100-200 of value that way.

I would hold out until at least $800.
If that isn't reached, then I'd probably use it to buy an iphone or something and flog that off. Just avoid putting your own money on top in case you don't get that back.
I reckon you should sell the gift card directly rather than buy something and try to sell it off. For a $900 store card you should be able to sell it for like $800. If someone is going to spend in Apple Store anyway he/she would have already saved $100 by buying the store card from you.
Go in store and sell it to someone who is about to make a purchase for a small discount.
I like the upgrade idea. Is there other gear that needs upgrading? Perhaps consider advertising all your tech for sale (eg. laptop/desktop PC/mobile/tablet/media centre/TV box/headphones). Then which ever sells first you can buy a replacement at the Apple store.
Its kind of slowly converting your second hand items into cash instead of converting the 1 apple gift card into cash.
