  We used nz discount car rentals in jan, hired a subaru legacy (liberty) for 10 days. Nice car, quite big, 2006 model, 6 cylinder, even had a reversing camera which was pretty nifty. Was only $34AUD per day, including airport delivery & dropoff etc.

      Also used Jucy on south island rented a"Tarago" van for around $34 a day inc tyre windscreen waiver (trav insurance covered rest). Sometimes you find the basic vans cheaper than cars and a little more flexible. Can camp around many areas. Like in national park for $5 (with toilet facilities) which was only 30 odd minutes from Milford sound. Which meant could take first trip on sound when there were no crowds and no buses on the road.

      On North Island got car from Ace rentals - older type car - 4 years old Nissan drove well

      Finally a BIG tip for cashing money in NZ. Use the post office bank - the rates are far more favourable than the other big banks or the money changers. (well was 10 months ago). ANZ NAB were giving $1.18 for each AUD where as post office bank gave me $1.24. (and I dont recall any fee for changing)

        thanks ozpete, just wondering when you said post office bank. i search on google, but can't find any post office bank website. do u mean just go to any post office in nz and exchange your money there?

          @dragonrabit: I believe oz is referring to kiwibank, and yes you can find the kiwibank counter in almost any NZ post office.

          I got the car (mitsi lancer) and it had only done 4000km, and was $40 a day for 2 weeks. Wasn't the cheapest option, but as we have kids, I wanted a fairly new car with airbags and ESP etc. You'll see why when you hit the road in Auckland.

            @stumo: thanks stumo, i also bring my 2 yrs old son with me. i only plan stay in auckland and surrounding area for 3-4 days only next month.

            is there anyone has try withdrawing cash from nz atm? i heard you just need to pay $5 and 1% charge.
