Google rep has commented that even the xiaomi ones are not up to proper USB C standard

something about not having the correct resistors

This dude is correct, unfortunately USB C is a goddamned mess, you need to specifically read reviews from this guy.

He'll put you on to genuinely good USB C equipment.
AVOID BAD USB C EQUIPMENT - don't let the garbage take off, diluting and ruining the standard, make these cheap chinese manufacturers comply. Even if it costs more in the long run.

  • Yeah I am pretty sure the ones I use on a daily basis are the same, but my phone is still kicking! (Famous last words)

    • wait, 6P comes with a USB to USB-C adapter right? at least mine did! :-o

  • Suggest people hold off buying cheap adaptors for now unless its tested to be complaint.

Cheap ones I got off fleaBay appear to be good according to this app

    • Same here.
I had ordered a bunch of cheap ones from eBay when I ( finally ) was able to place my order for the new Nexus.

And surprisingly they seem to be good according to the different apps which test this sort of stuff.

  • Quote from Google rep:
"By using this cable, your phone, tablet, or laptop computer may attempt to draw 3A, which may be more than the micro-b to A cable you attach to this adapter may be able to handle. This may cause damage to whatever cable, hub, pc, or charger you plug into this,"

So basically: It seems most of these cheaper cables still work when charging a smartphone - but using them to charge a higher-power device such as the Chromebook Pixel (and perhaps the new MacBook) probably won't work, and may be quite dangerous.

Be careful which cables you buy - it's gonna be false economy if that cheap arse Chinese cable/adapter burns your house down.

  • What if I'm not using it for charging? That's okay right?

  • I only use mine for data transfer myself. I don't think that is an issue at all.

I purchased some cables from eBay months before the Nexus came out and they were here waiting for it when I finally received it. Beauty of them are they both passed the CheckR test so shouldn't burn the house down!

  • I forsee many burned out USB chargers from people connecting 3A USB C to 1A USB 2.0 chargers. Decent quality chargers will limit their own current, but most of the bargain ones sold here don't.

My friends are already regularly bringing their 5W 1A iPod chargers over to my house asking if I can fix them (I can't) after they hook their tablets or smartphones up and burn them out trying to draw 7W or 10W from them. Surprisingly some Apple iPod chargers don't seem to limit their own current, and burn out if overstressed. They have their own resistor network which works with Apple devices but seems to be fooled by Android or generic USB devices.
