Bought a camera from Dicksmith only to be found the box empty

Bought a cheap display unit for $27 from David Jones Chadstone on 2/12/15 for a friend. I didnt open the box until today when my friend opened it and found no camera in the box. The charger and USB cable was in the box and the box relatively heavy for a compact camera. So, it didn't feel light in my hand. It was an embarrassing situation for me. I will go to the store tomorrow but how can I prove that the box was empty at the time of buying? Also, I am almost certain even if I win the argument the maximum they will offer me is the refund which would be a disappointing outcome as well as I won't be able to buy another camera for $27. I am really disappointed with Dicksmith. This is the second time I am having a bad experience buying something from Dicksmith this year. In the last instance I had to call Dicksmith 13 times to get a refund for an online transaction blunder.

That is unfortunately what happens. If they don't have another camera, they can't sell it to you. Get them to ask if another store nearby has it.

I went to pick up my click and collect order the other day and when I got there the guy could only find 1 of the two items. He said I could either get a refund or if I wanted, to pick the other item up at another store.

Just be honest. Explain the situation.

The serial on the box/instructions should match the display product.

The best you'll get is $27 back

it's a display unit and yet you didnt see the staff getting the camera from the display stand and put it in to the box?

  • The camera would be gone by now.

Happened to my husband with a GPS from Dick Smith once. He realised as he was walking out of the shop thankfully. Will now only buy items sealed in plastic from Dick Smith.

    • Um, check the contents of the box.

  • Similar happened to me. The display unit was still on display when I returned and it wasn't a hassle. Since it has been a little longer for you that complicates it, but it is very possible it is still in stock, as the inventory system will have it marked as sold, so it shouldn't have been sold again.

Just go back and ask, sometimes they just take it out to prevent people from stealing or that's on display.

  • Happened to me when I bought my gps from them two weeks ago, luckily I realised as soon a so left the shop. I still got a weird look from manager as if I was stealing. I told him the box even feels light. He said nothing, as soon as he picked up another box with content his face melted. Very rude imo.
