IP Camera Solution, Help Needed

Good afternoon fellow ozbargainers!

I am needing some advice on something I have little experience on.

We are wanting to set up about 4 IP cameras in our business with the following features:

-wired, PoE preferable
-2 outside and 2 inside
- Would like decent quality to be able to read a license plate at night
- Want to mount them once, so don't mind paying a bit for quality
- I want all recording to be motion detected at night and continuous during the day
- also be able to remove old footage to replace with new

Now the pickle I am having; I would like them to be able to run with only my NAS powered up. Don't want to have a computer on all the time. I was thinking about using Netgear surveillance software but it is quite pricey (200 USD for license)

Don't need any cloud/ remote access as we don't have a fixed internet connections

Does PoE need special ethernet cables, I know it needs the switch. Can you use normal ethernet to connect computers off the PoE switch? (I assume so)

All help appreciated, I have googled quite a bit but it all seems to be from 2008/2009 which is quite old now.
thanks

  • You can just use normal ethernet yeah, I would recommend CAT5e or CAT6 though

What kind of NAS do you have? You may want to use an intel NUC to record your streams.

    • Cool, i have been using Cat6 and Cat6E (MSY) for my network so far so that will be fine

  • You will need cat5e or cat6, just the normal stuff yes. I too have 2 inside and 2 outside with the same requirements as you, just that we have internet and a static IP so we can access cameras remotely.

We run 4 x 3MP Hikvision dome cameras with IR-cut filters, hooked up to a 8 port Hikvision NVR (and PoE injector) with a 2TB drive. They are very customisable, either via the on-board interface, or if hooked up to an NVR, the NVR interface. We have the different cameras set up to record differently too - motion detect, 24/7 record, scheduled recording.

We did the installation work ourselves but if you get someone to do it, you can probably get it all done around the $2000+ mark. Don't forget there are often lens options (narrow, wide FOV) that you will need to check and know what you're getting before ordering. We bought our gear off ali express.

This is a good website to start off - http://www.networkcameracritic.com/

    • Thanks heaps for that mate!
I would be doing all the installation myself so that will be good for keeping the cost down.
Have you been pretty happy with the quality of the hikvision cameras?

  • Yes they have been reliable enough (for a prosumer level product). I have had maybe only 1 drop out over 18 mths and that was easily fixed by rebooting the NVR.

We have 2 other people at work on Hikvision gear and even the local council has installed Hikvision cameras all over their building. Same sensor but they opted for the turret design. We chose dome over turret or bullet as it is harder to knock out of position and also you can't easily see which way the cameras are pointing.

They have since released new models that record audio also.

  • Hi,

Check out Synology NAS, comes with 2 license and you can buy more.
    Great feature set for Surveillance.

    Cheers

    • Cheers for the advice but I have already bought a netgear nas I am afraid

      • given the license cost maybe sell the Netgear on Gumtree and switch ?
        Could end up cheaper ?
Otherwise you have to rely on the build in firmware of the individual cameras.

        Cheers

  • Hi ALl,

I got a Synology NAS and was looking into Camera's.

I'm looking at POE Hikvision 3mp. Do I need to be careful around chinese firmware if I get them off AliExpress? Anything to watch out for?
