Currently I only use TunnelBear's free VPN (limited to 500mb per month, with an extra 1GB if you tweet about TunnelBear). TunnelBear is based on Canada (which as far as I can tell, has no mandatory data retention laws). I'd like some advice about various VPNs (based on people's experience) on non-US based VPNs (my family is also interested in a VPN, but they'd rather not have one based in the US). Unfortunately, this rules out PrivateInternetAccess, which appears to be a pretty good VPN.
Choices of VPNs That Are Non-US Based

I read from this post on Whirlpool, and the guy who reviewed several VPNs listed US based VPNs as a con. My guess is due to NSA concerns and something to do with the Five Eyes (which both the US & Australia are part of, and Australia now has mandatory data retention).
Perhaps you or any others could enlighten me on why I may be misguided on this?
As far as I know US does not impose mandatory data retention, however US legislation allows feds the power to request users' log files from any US based VPN.
PIA states in their fine print they do not store log and activity files, but does not mean it's bullet proof.
There are pros and cons, I guess.the nsa can and does spy on every nation (-5 eyes if you believe) in the world. you cannot hide from them if you're on their watchlist.
it will be difficult to find a vpn not on this list.

Bought Tiger Lifetime: cheap > Czech based, flatrate; speediest latency from America servers. BUT only a few Mbps against uncapped Pure> China based. No subpoenas :|.
There is not much you can do when the submarine cables are already tapped.
May I ask why you do not want it to be based in the US? It is one of the few countries that do not have mandatory data retention.
PIA does not log any activity and it is not subjected to any data retention law.
Am I missing something here?
