How much?? Add the price in the title

    • Fixed, much appreciated.

And a link to the deal.

    • Fixed, cheers.

    legal?

  • +1

What are the legalities for owning these things? I'm an amateur photographer and I wouldn't mind some coloured LASERs for light painting, but I don't want the popo to fine me.

    • Using our laser equipment for photography is perfectly fine. Always be aware of aircraft and any living thing when using a laser, especially outdoors.

For information on the laws in your state, see here: http://www.ozlasers.com/australian-laser-laws

    • +1

I use a torch which you can focus (spread or focus the beam based on your subject) to light paint. I have found the lasers to be too strong (light source vise) and doesn't cover enough area to paint properly within the exposure time frames.

      • Also, I've heard reports of sensors being damaged by lasers (but I don't know the wattage, or how long the sensor was exposed for)

    • +1

If you specifically want to paint with lasers (monochromatic light or very precise painting of distant objects) you are better off looking at a focusable laser diode as painting with a collimated (narrow beam) laser pointer will leave your subject covered in stripes (which can look cool and may be what you're after).

I have to agree though that these seem overpriced…

You're more than welcome to buy from Ebay, but if you buy from OzLasers, I can guarantee the quality and after sales support, guaranteed faulty replacement and after-hours email support.

      Cheers!

      • +1

Have you actually tested your green lasers to make sure they're 1mW? The few I've bought off eBay - even though they say 1mW - ended up being around the 20-40mW range…

        • how do you test them?

        • +1

          @turbodude:

Point them at your eye and see how long it takes before you get blind :-)

Being serious now, there are devices to measure laser power. Probably cost orders of magnitude more than the pointer though.

        • +3

This is a valid point. To see a visible beam I would have a guess this is about 5mW even though it is labelled as 1mW.

        • +1

Can you tell me which ebay items are listed as 1mw but are really 20-40mw?

        • @gamemaster: I didn't know that. I remember back to high school physics and our school's laser beam was only visible it passed through chalk dust or smoke particles.

        • I'm doubtful of this. The penalties for selling over 1mW are pretty harsh and only an idiot would sell anything significantly stronger with a false label for $20 and risk ending up in prison. Like the others said how have you tested?

          Note I don't doubt a variation of say 10-20% so a 1.2mW laser sold as 1mW wouldn't shock me.

        • @syousef:

1.2mW would still be breaking the law.

Have a read of the Candlepower forums or look up 1mW lasers on YouTube being higher power than claimed. There is a risk that the lasers are higher power than 1mW particularly if they are the readily available generic ones found elsewhere. Maybe the seller can provide the brand of the laser, a guarantee that it is less than 1mW, and take liability if it isn't.

Generally speaking it takes about 2mW to see a green laser beam at night time (from a laser that produces decent culminated light). In dusty/smoky/foggy conditions it might be lower. Based on the photos on the website, they don't look like <1mW green lasers IMO.

        • @gamemaster:

Yep 1.2mW would be breaking the law…unless you join an approved astronomy club and use them responsibly.

As for the ads…well let's just say our false advertising laws have become toothless.

        • still interested to know how you are testing them. Are you just measure the input current and multiplying it by the voltage to give power (watts) or do you have something to actually measure the light output. Genuinely interested to know.

        • @turbodude: Good morning,

We use a number of different techniques including an optical laser power meter.

If a laser doesn't stand up to the testing it's returned to the manufacturer.

        • @whitefalcon112: thanks for the response but the question was actually for f4te as he made the comment that ones advertised as 1mW were actually 20-40mW.

        • @turbodude: We have a few optical laser power meters at work, if I get a chance next week I'll take a few of the laser pointers I bought from eBay and check them again.

        • @f4te: Very cool. I am assuming these are an expensive bit of equipment?

    • +1

      Busted.

After hours email support? Dont think thats worth $15 + extra - id hazard a guess that my 3am broken laser email is answered the next business day at best!

      • Having staff available to answer questions and support customers after business hours does not add an extra $15 to the price of each laser pointer. Our lasers are of a considerably higher quality than those you might find on Ebay and because of this, each unit costs quite a bit more.

        • Its the same item pictured….i seriously doubt they dont come from the exact same factory in china. You are right that it doesnt add $15 - it adds $20! Can be had for under $5 delivered on ebay lol

Or for $13 you can get three - red green and purple.

So for the same price you want for one, you can have 6 from ebay!

        • +1

Email at 3am: dear whitefalcon112, which end do i hold?

email next day at 1pm: Dear pointless comment, please be sure to hold the end with the light away from your face and body

Email at 1.04pm: (using dictation program) dear whitefalcon112, the email support which i payed a premium for was too long in its reply. I am now clinically blind.

        • +3

@pointless comment: Thanks for your message, and good to hear from you again.

The after hours support we offer is for those who are gainfully employed or have other reasons why they may not be able to communicate with us during business hours.

We do not offer support, or the sale of laser pointers to people who misuse them or are not properly aware of the safety risks.

Thanks again for your numerous comments.

          Cheers.

        • -2

@whitefalcon112: i think at this point, all jokes aside, you need ot ask yourself if sarcasm is a good look for a rep trying to sell heinously overpriced product on a forum dedicated to the best possible prices?

        • @pointless comment: How would buying the cheaper one help you then? :) Once you're blind it won't matter what you spent…

        • -1

@gokhanh: ok ill humour you…theoretically, if i bought the more expensove one for its customer support id have avoided said blindness.

          Thanks for playing!

        @pointless comment
"…..a guess that my 3am broken laser email is answered….."

What is wrong with you, why so rude? Reasonable interpretation of after-hours might be early evening or weekends but for some reason you go for the extreme of 3am. If you don't think it's a deal, that's fine, no problems. How about winding back on the aggression and rudeness though?

        • -8

I actually think your comment aimed at me is the rudest one one this page - i was expressing an opinion based on fact. You are just making assumptions that are borderline offensive.

At the end of the day, the merchant is trying to sell product at 500% price difference to comparable online retailers.

My opinion is that it is overpriced, and that ozbargain is the wrong crowd to pitch that price too.

you have escalated that into An assumption is that there is something wrong with me and that i am being rude.

Interested to know how many lasers did you buy at $25 a pop?

        • +5

          @pointless comment:

So state your reason and vote negative, just stop the rudeness and aggression please. Also the faux outrage :)

I didn't buy any lasers at any price.

        • -1

          @jdr: faux sho

        • -1

          @jdr:

I guess you could say it was a pretty pointless comment on his behalf

  • +2

Do these lasers have IR filters in them?

  • +4

In defence of the seller, they've done the work of getting them through customs for you. I've bought the ebay ones in the past and had 'you've been a naughty boy' letter from Aus customs.

    • The ones i refer to above are sold from within Aus. Customs wont give a second look even of they were powerful enough burn a new crater in the moon!

      • +1

I know loads of people who had customs nab lasers regardless of the power since they changed the laws in NSW a few years back. Also know of a situation cops followed people up. Quite ridiculous.

        • Depends on the power. There are lasers that can burn out people's eyes in a glance. I don't want idiots getting hold of those and playing blind the stranger in the crowd then skulking off invisibly.

    • you've been a naughty boy

      ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • +2

I agree with your comments too. I also had pointers confiscated from Customs, albeit they are those cheap <$5 pointers from ebay.

      Interesting argument though;

      1. Gerry Harvey whining the online business from overseas hurting local retailers.
      2. Govt taxing on all overseas purchases from 01-Jul-2017.
      • On the left - folks with the Ozbargain spirit giving leads on where to find the cheapest deals.
      • On the right - small business trying to compete and give reasons why their costs are higher (while the majority of consumers do not see the "behind the scene costs" such as labour, overheads, or just being a small business in Australia)

So who has the last laugh?

      —- edit —-

for clarity - I am not affiliated nor do i know the OP/ seller. therefore the above assumptions ie small business in Australia etc

    • They don't care as long as it's not assembled and battery operated. I've got modular 2W watt lasers through and simply put her in flashlight housings and throw in 18650 battery.

  • +2

You can get the same lasers from eBay for much cheaper, also sent within Australia.

    As an example:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BMK-3-Pcs-Green-Purple-Red-Laser-…

This deal is certainly no bargain, it is expensive.

  • +2

Green lasers are useful for pointing out objects in the night sky. Unfortunately you really want a 5-10mW laser to do so especially in a light polluted city. You can barely see 1mW if you're lucky, whereas 5 just shoots out and is brilliant. I really wish they'd made the limit 5 or 10mW instead of 1mW. You're allowed to own them but only if you're a member of an approved Astronomy club. Since their restriction prices have shot up by a factor of 10 because it now requires expensive special import permits to legally bring one into the country. Bring one in with too high a power from Ebay and you could be facing weapons importation charges.

    In NSW:
    http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/services/firearms/laser_pointer…
"Note that you will not need to obtain a permit to possess/use a laser pointer with a power level greater than one milliwatt if you are a member of an approved astronomical organisation."

Please don't join a club just so you can be an idiot with one of these. You'll only end up getting them blanket banned and you'll still end up in hot water too. Also from the above link.
"To put a stop to such behaviour, the Government has made it an offence for anyone to have a laser pointer in their custody in a public place or to use a laser pointer in a public place without a reasonable excuse. If a police officer has reasonable grounds for suspecting that you are in possession of a laser pointer in a public place, they may search you, confiscate the laser and commence legal action."

    • Or you can buy the diode, and case separately then assemble :D - completely legal

      • +1

If you build a handheld laser of more than 1mW power you just built a weapon. Same rules apply.

Interestingly it only applies to hand held lasers….until some idiot ruins that too by doing something stupid with a laser that plugs into a wall socket.

These things have legitimate uses and it is a real pity idiots are blinding people and "shooting down" planes with them.

        • Up next: quad copters

        • I meant the import of them is legal, the construction of a powerful handheld laser is of course illegal unless one has a legitimate reason for the power of the laser. Of course, it isn't illegal if no one knows about it, and you are cautious enough to not be caught with it. It is a real pity that some people are idiots and use it for that.

        • @krisspy:

Already happening in the US. Looks like all R/C aircraft modelling is going to become too hard for anyone who's not rich and dedicated :(

    http://www.productreview.com.au/p/ozlasers.html

    Do not buy from ozlasers.

I ordered a laser last year, they take your money but don't deliver. I tried contacting but no response and eventually gave up and forgot about them…until is saw this "deal", total scammers

    • Did you pay the $25 premium for round the clock email support?

    • +1

How many of us here have posted a positive review on productreview for a business that we have had no issues with?

When something bad happens, people will shout from the hills to make sure everybody knows about it. When nothing happens and a transaction happens smoothly, people generally won't look for a forum just to write a post saying "Transaction went perfectly fine, nothing happened".

      • Happens all the time on ebay

        • Because that's how ebay works.
How many positive reviews have you posted for retail stores?

  • I bought one. Still awaiting confirmation or for them to send it.. Feels like a scam with them not accepting PayPal and all
