SMART TV - What Are Everyone's Preferences?

I have been looking around for smart TVs for a while. Its hard to decide between cheaper Kogan and other versions vs known brands such as Samsung/LG. My preference is between 40"-50" (close to 50 ideal).

What are everyones preferences?

Cheers

I think it's best to get an external device for "smart" functions like a PS4, Chromecast, Roku 3 or Apple TV and just concentrate on what image quality you can get from a TV. Smart TVs in my experience are quite sluggish and you pay more for an inferior image compared to other models around the same price range that don't have smart features. YMMV of course but that's just my take on it.

    • Completely agree. My Sony smart TV software is really bad. YouTube app keeps on buffering for ever and other apps are also ordinary. No software update and online support is none. It is one of the reasons that I never looked back at any other product of Sony.
Using Chromecast is easy, cheaper and faster.

Samsung's smart tv software is quite sluggish in my opinion. The new range of tv's from LG that works with the the LG Magic Remote looks tops. Sure you can use an external device to get the smarts, but to me that's just a hassle. Extra wires, extra power leads, extra effort! A button that you can just press on the remote to access the smart function I think, is so much more convenient.

    • I have a Samsung smart tv from 2014 range and I have tested LG and Sony. They were all sluggish compared to a PC but Samsung was fastest and most intuitive.

I wouldn't browse the internet on my smart tv, but apps like youtube, netflix, work well. They take 3-30 seconds to load on different days (not sure why the time difference) but once they do, browsing the menu is responsive. Love netflix, especially. So good to use just one remote, no extra wires.

You can also cast videos from laptop to the tv; very rarely have video format incompatibility.

I have not used chromecast or apple tv for long periods, so cannot compare. Hope that helps :)

  • crap tv = crap interface. i have 2012 LG Plasma and the smart features are top noth. DLNA, youtube etc all great

Dumb TV (with decent specs) and an android box. Android boxes are pretty cheap and more easily updated.

  • Didn't some Samsung smart TVs have malware or something a while back?
