Please Suggest Me a Reliable People Mover That Is Cheap and Suitable for 170cm Adults in The Rear Row

Hello..

I'm looking to upsize my car.

Here are the requirements.

Car must be very reliable. Currently in a 2010 Mazda 3 which has given me no issues in 150,000km.

I do 15000km /year (about 25km to work and 25 back home daily.. I do suburban driving 29 days of the month , 1 day a month I do a highway trip of 600k.

I need to move 6 adults and 1 baby. The shortest adult is 170cm. I need to put a pram and about 4 bags of shopping in the trunk so I want a long boot so I don't have to put the pram on top of the bags.

Can spend up to 50k, but the less that better as I am a OZBARAGINER!!!!

Suggestions please :)

  • I'm in a similar position and noticed that Drive's car of the year feature is out.

Kia Carnival looks like it could squeak in under your budget! The Citroen is probably no good as it's rear seats don't really fit adults well

    • I will test drive a petrol and diesel Carnival this weekend…

There's not that many on the market. Really it's:
    Hyundai iMax
    Kia Carnival, or Grand Carnival
    Toyota Tarago

Given the budget, look at the Tarago first. Going to offer stronger resale than the other 2, and likely better reliability. But really it's only those 3, could easily check them out online, see what's within budget, then go look.

Sounds like practicality and space should outweigh fuel economy in your situation, as you need to make sure the adults are comfy rather than care about the extra $10/week in fuel it might cost you.

How about a Nissan El Grand

More room than a Kia Grand Carnival (with much more quality and Options), more comfortable and far more options than a Hyundai iMax, and more reliable and cheaper to own (from what I've heard) than a VW Multivan OR a Mercedes Vito.

Friends has remote controlled opening Side Doors with keyless Entry, 9 Speaker Bose Sound System, Drop down rear DVD player with 5.1 Surround Sound(!), Self Cornering Headlights, Dual Sunroofs, Bluetooth etc etc etc

    • You'd be nuts buying an import.

I'd stay away from the Kia also, only 4 star safety.

  • I don't know much about people movers (I'd buy an SUV instead), but is the Prius V big enough for you?

Fitting 6 tall adults plus a child seat, you'd be crazy to look at a 7 or 8 seater SUV. Even a 200 series Cruiser would struggle to fit everyone at once. This is just one of those examples where the people mover is the vehicle for the job.

Yeah I get that vans are bigger inside, but they are still vans.

  • 6 adults?
Tell your 4 adult children to stop mooching off you.
    Hahaha just kidding.
Make sure you get a "baby on board" sticker for the back.
God forbid if you drive without it.

  • how about the toyota kluger with 7 seat option. It's very reliable and looks a bit better than the minivans.

    • Zero room behind the third row seats!

  • Tarago, baby.

    (ex-owner, big fan)

    • Lots of mini-turnips huh? :P

      • Just one turnip that likes lots of room :D

        • So you can lay the seats flat and have umm spreading out room huh?

@Spackbace: Gotta stretch the legs somewhere on long journeys! ;)

  • Definitely the Elgrand!
Mine (2002, 105000km, 1yr of warranty remaining - $12000) is for sale as I am moving overseas shortly. I'll be buying another when I get where I'm going.

  • We bought a Delica D5. Plenty of room. 5 cameras. Rear & middle seats movable for more leg room & can take 4 baby seats if needed.

  • Because of the size of my crew, I will definitely stick with the people mover option. I will choose between Tarago and Carnival, maybe Elgrand

    I thank you all…

  • What did you end up choosing?

    • In the end I valued reliability so didn't go for any older vehicles. Couldn't find any good deals on people movers. Lots of legroom in front and back for the tall adults I need to move.

I chose two 2015 Camry Altise which cost about $15000 each.
