Best value Netflix device to connect to a TV?

Hi guys just trying to work out what the best value Netflix streaming device is for connecting with a TV.

I am looking for one that would work for my girlfriends parents who are pretty tech illiterate, Chromecast might be too complicated to use and is not ideal since you have to use another device to control it rather than just a remote control.

Would be good if you can run other apps like ABC iView also but not necessarily required, Netflix is mainly what it would be used for. They have Optus cable so it's unmetered so HD streaming would be ideal although 4K is definitely not required as they only have a small TV that does 1080.

Thanks

Because your folks have Optus maybe look at fetch TV it supports netflix, iview and it will allow to record TV it's been around for a while now in Australia so it should be a stable product maybe do some research on it or play it it at a Optus store as I haven't used one.

Chromecast is pretty easy but you do need, internet, WiFi and a control device you could use a cheap tablet for this the lenovo a20 $99 from jb or office works

There also Apple TV, and Android TV best Android TV device is the nvidia sheild TV it can do 4k again I haven't used these so unsure.

  • WDTV is what my kids use, they're getting a bit old now so you should be able to get one cheap.

  • Not an Apple fan - but AppleTV is probably the easiest netflix device for tech illiterate people.

    • Especially if they already happen to have an iPhone/iPad.

  • Laptop or HTPC permanently hooked to the TV.
Assuming they are comfortable with navigating a PC

+1 for Apple TV. Purely for ease of use, but also the ability to pay your netflix subscription with itunes cards. You can then take advantage of the 20% off and buy one get one free promos to bring your average monthly spend down.

  • Had the exact same idea for my folks for Christmas - a streaming device and a netflix subscription.

After looking around I think I'll go with the new Apple TV - it's not really a bargain but it seems the best as a gift.

  • The Apple TV has been suggested a few times but it's pretty expensive for the newest model that can run apps ($268 for the 32GB, $348 for the 64GB at JB), anyone have experience with the Roku 3?

$108.78 (US) with shipping (~$150 AUD)

    • Given the intended recipients, why not go for the apple tv3 rather than the new one? $88 @ Harvey Norman.
Will they really use Siri or 7.1 Dolby?

      • They don't have any Apple devices in the house so they have no ability to use AirPlay, will they still be able to use Netflix on Apple TV 3?

Yes. Netflix is a native app on the AppleTV, which is HDMI output to the TV. Youll just need to create an account.

@elvino: Thank you, I have told my girlsfriends dad to purchase the Apple TV 3 from Harvey Norman =) For $88 that's probably the best value other than a Chromecast

No problem - its a good deal, and I think it will fit the purpose. merry Christmas

        • @Agret: You should've bought it for them! $88 is not much considering what you can get in return if you know what I mean

    • Cheaper on B&H -https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/221902

  • The new apple tv supports Netflix well, but it comes with the high price tag $349 http://www.apple.com/au/shop/buy-tv/apple-tv

Alternatively I have Netflix integrated into my Samsung LED TV smart hub. Winning!

    • lol I said best value not most overkill options.

They have a Samsung TV but it only has the Quickflix app and not Netflix :(

  • Yes I have had a Roku for 3 Months andI love it, best of all u can access steaming from ANY country
