How Safe Is Mexico City?

How safe is Mexico city?

Going to Los Angeles for the LA Marathon in mid-February and a Microsoft roadshow beforehand.
I have the option of attending late-January in Los Angeles or early-February in Mexico City.

The late Feb in Mexico suits much better in terms of travel dates, but how safe is Mexico City really?

Has anyone been recently and what is your opinion?

Haven't been but from what I've heard, probably just buy a one way ticket.

Probably depends which parts you go to, like most cities there will be bad areas. But I can honestly say I felt much safer in Mexico City than I did in LA.

    • LA is pretty bad, I actually felt afraid walking around town and taking the train home to my apartment every night…even eating at maccas was intimidating, there were so many Hispanics staring at me while I chow down my double quarter ponder cheese burger meal at the corner of the restaurant. Maybe because im asian…

  • I did a contiki in mexico for 6 days then stayed a week in cancun. I had a great time and felt quite safe. In saying that i was mainly in the tourist areas doing tourist things. Like strat bargain ive felt safer in mexico than some other places around the world.

    • Thanks mate, probably more interested in person experiences.

      • Fair enough. Just worth checking the site close to your travel dates for any alerts.

  • I went to Mexico City in 2013. Whilst you could get away with only knowing English in Cabos San Lucas or any other tourist centric spot in Mexico, you'll need to learn some basic Spanish for Mexico City.

Cabos San Lucas has military style police everywhere with AK-47's protecting their income sources (tourists) so they can continue buying Time Shares and Rolex watches. I felt safe walking around at any time of the night (even after drinks). Meanwhile, I wouldn't exactly do that in Mexico City (the back streets felt a bit shady…) Just go out for dinner in a group of 2 or more people, don't have your mobile/wallet in rear pocket etc and you'll be fine!

Keep away from Tijuana or anything near the north border!

  • We were there March 2014 for a week. Amazing city and so much to see and do. We hired a driver who took us to Puebla for a night in a convertible vw. Amazing

  • How far away is Mexico City from San Fernando?

Hopefully as far away as possible.

  • Was there two years ago and felt pretty safe. Stuck to mostly the tourist areas and would think twice about walking down dark alleys at night but never had a problem, even on the metro not once did I feel unsafe.

I'd agree with others above that it's probably about on par with LA. Just be mindful of where you go and when and it's fine. I've felt far less safe in the US and some of Europe than Mexico City.

  • Stick to the good/touristy areas and you'll be ok.
Taxis are the big problem you'll need to make sure you call ahead and get into the right one don't get one off the street..

  • watch scam city, that should give you clues
