Looks like it is a decent price for this entry level action camera. If you add up a $2 item in, and use $25 newsletter sign up voucher, will make the price even better.

I think the even smaller one is higher spec'd, but about $50 more from memory. Still very decent.
Do you mean the Session? That's $150 more at new price of $299.
Oh, sorry, I'm sure you are right. At half price, a very good alternative then.
I bought one for 220 yesterday, GoPro Hero 4 Session. Everyone is saying to wait as the prices are going to drop in the next week or so.
Anyone know if this has the equivalent video quality / features of the original Hero 1 or 2? I'm guessing Hero 1.
I thought Hero 1 has normal HD resolution of 1280720. This is Full HD 19201080, I think it is closer to entry level Hero 3.
Maybe you're right about Hero 1.
My Hero 2 does 1280P at 40-something fps from memory, and 720P at 60fps so maybe this is similar to it? The quality of the Hero 2 is still great. The worst thing about it is the oval lens, means it's useless underwater, and special underwater housing costs $100 approx, and is huge, so this is an awesome deal in that context. I've bought too much stuff of late so will have to miss it ;)
This is the lowest spec'd one, right? How does it compare to the Xiaomi Yi?
I'm looking into that now, by the time you buy the waterproof housing for the Yi they work out to around the same price.
Xiaomi Yi is alittle more flexible than the base Go pro.

One bad point about this Hero Action is the battery is non-removable. If your battery runs out, you cannot swap out a new battery on the spot to continue recording again.
Yes my thoughts exactly the Hero 4s are a significant jump in price so I am interested in starting with a xiaomi first, also with the waterproof housing on full time means you cant change it once it scratches up, Just image some scratches on the front of the device and you can not change the housing.
You can install a cheap UV filter to protect the lens housing.
Xiaomi Yi is definitely a good cheaper alternative action cam. It also has a good Sony Exmor sensor.
@edfoo: How about the Sony action cams ive seen that jb has a few on special.
@DaTa: They are good too. They have the advantage of (software) image stabilization, useful in reducing shakes in some action shots.
my advice, save a bit, and get a higher up model unless you just want a toy for the kids. This model is perfectly fine if you just want the very basics, and for this price, you are still getting great value. I got this for a last minute trip when officeworks had it on sale at 160, a friend had a higher spec one they got last year, and the difference was pretty massive when comparing the same type of footage, particularly in water (jumping in / snorkelling) type stuff. For still shots this one is lower quality than most phones these days (5mp). My other main gripe was the fact you can't take it out of the shell meaning you need to be extra careful not to scratch or damage the front and you want to keep it free of dust if using the open back for better sound. It's secure in there, but any build up over time and you'd run into issues i think. (can't switch battery either, all built in)
Comes down to what you need / want. This will do the job really well if you are set still on a tripod, or don't care too much for a really great shot, but once you start adding in fast movement, you'll notice the difference from a higher spec one. (1080p 30fps / 720p superview 60fps are your max on this)I agree to save up and buy higher model of GoPro Hero 4 but only when they are on sale with decent discount. GoPro at RRP are rip-off. I only bought my Hero 4 Silver earlier this year when it was on sale for $319, otherwise no way I am going to pay GoPro's highway robbery RRP.
The polaroid cube at $148 may do just as well for a simple video camera.
same price at Officeworks as well in case people cant find a HN nearby
