50" SMART? TV with Wi-Fi? for Netflix & free to air viewing

Hi all,

Am hoping someone can point me in the right direction

The parents are in the market for a 50" TV to replace their aging Plasma. Not much room to move on size unfortunately, possibly a couple of inches up or down.

The most important features they are after is Firmware/Software capable of as bug free as possible Wi-Fi Netflix/Youtube/Facebook use.

As far as Wi-Fi is concerned, am I better off just buying a half decent panel and pairing with a Chrome-cast?

The imagine quality is really the least of their concern. It will mainly be used for Free to air and low-definition Netflix viewing so 4k & UHD is going to be a complete waste.

One other thing that is needed is at least one Optical/SPDIF output to make use of the Z906 speakers I have bought them for Xmas!

I guess I'm mostly after model recommendations. They are in no hurry to buy.

Thanks in advance :)

Concerning TV we have a cheap Dick Smith 47.5 which we bought 6 months ago, we are happy with it but not particularly too worried about image quality. It has full HD.
Then I connected an android box, it does all I need such as Netflix, Youtube, BBC (using smartdns)We also have chromecast but I tend to use android box more because it has all the apps in one place and I have airmouse. I think it has also, spdif but I don't use it.
    This is the android http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_232374.html

For TV you can buy anything if you go for chromecast or android box.

Mate, every single smart tv i've used is absolute crap, do not buy a TV due to it's smart connectivity/wifi etc.

Just buy an android box/chromecast/apple tv/flavour of the day and hook it into an HDMI port.

  • Yeh, From the limited research I've done I have guessed that it is the case :3

What do you guys mean by android box?

As someone who fixes Apple Phones/tablets I wouldn't touch any Apple product with a Billion foot Pole :p

In regard to Android Box/Chromecast; what are the major pros and cons of the two systems?

Chromecast is basically only a streaming device, which you will need a separate controller to run.

Most android boxes can run pretty much anything from a usb (or online, like the chromecast), and come with a remote.

Really depends what you want to do with it, however be aware to control the chromecast with netflix you'll need a tablet or phone.

I'm unsure about facebook, i've never used that on a tv.

  • Thanks for the advice Davo!

Think I will just go with one of the ~50" Kogan Smart TV's and if the firmware gives the rents too much trouble put them onto a decent android box.

They have a WD Live here but the old man thinks it's useless (aka he doesn't know how to use it lol)
