International Travel Insurance for 89/90 Year Old

My mother is going to London next year for two months to celebrate her 90th birthday with my sister. We will be travelling with her.

Can someone suggest a suitable travel insurance company subject to the following:

• She will be travelling on one airline each way so missed connection due to delay of first flight coverage isn’t a critical factor.

• Luggage insurance is nice to have but her luggage and contents won’t be very valuable so it isn’t a critical factor.

• Medical coverage in transit is essential. This should cover such things as:
o Falling and breaking bones on the plane or in the transit lounge
o The plane having to land because of a medical emergency
o Medical evacuation

• How pre-existing conditions are handled.
o Some say that claims due to undiagnosed pre-existing conditions are covered. Most don’t.
o Some say that you can get coverage for pre-existing conditions if you pay an additional premium. This would be the preferred option.

• Phone interview vs medical examination. Some say that they will perform a medical interview over the phone. I would prefer a face to face medical examination because I don’t trust my mother with her poor hearing to comprehend a question and / or to give a complete answer. Some companies say that if you have an undisclosed pre-existing condition, even if it isn’t related to the cause of the claim, coverage will be denied.

• She will only be in the UK while she is away where she will be covered by the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement between Australia and the UK.

Is it possible to get travel insurance that only provides medical coverage while in transit?

I know that these work because a few years ago I tore my Achilles tendon while running up stairs and turning sharply on the landing. I went to a hospital in the Netherlands where I was operated on the next day, had the plaster cast changed 3 times over 6 weeks and had 6 weeks of physiotherapy. It was all free except that I had to pay to rent the crutches.

We saw a lot more of the Netherlands than we ever expected to!

We are retired and we were travelling independently for 4 months by leased car so the delay wasn’t a major problem.

Are there any other factors / gotchas that I need to be aware of?

  • I think 89 is the cut off age for travel insurance. Even for 89 you have very limited options.

  • If you want it to cover pre-existing conditionals I think it will be difficult. A family friend who had a triple bypass wanted to travel to the USA and was very difficult, she ended finding some through the help of an insurance broker but it wasn't cheap. I imagine an insurance broker would be the only chance of finding cover for pre-existing conditions for your mother.

If you are just wanting regular travel insurance then you can usually purchase online and sit and answer the questions with your mother, then perhaps run the answers past her GP to be sure they're answered correctly.
