Looking for a new BBQ

Hi all,

I'm looking for a new BBQ. The Weber Family Q3100 has caught my eye and I was wondering what the general consensus is regarding this make/model?
Also, Masters are doing them for $726 at the moment. Is there anyone doing them cheaper, or is it worth hanging on in the hope that Masters have a sale or offer a discount voucher??

  • Weber Q's are highly regarded.
    They rarely come on sale.
    eBay sales have been the best way to get them. But they probably aren't much better than the savings you'll make using cameron_les suggestion.

    Where you from? Someone on Gumtree in NSW is selling that model brand new for $650. If you're good looking you could even flirt and negotiate further!

    • And if your ugly and smell they may reduce the price even further to get rid of you just make sure you put your hands on it.

    The $100 4 burner ones from bunnings do a fine job. While webers are better made, you are paying for hype to a certain extent. Its more about whos cooking than what they are cooking on - and with the chepaer ones your dont have to worry about keeping it sheltered, secure etc

  • I don't think Weber is a hype. It has been proven by tonnes of insert all kinds of meat here cooked on it.
    OP, what is the size of family you are cooking for? Q3100 is not really portable and I don't think you can remove it from the cart.
    Q2000, on the other hand, can cook for four easily. To cook a full size chook, some prefer Q2100 or 2200, but they are only available from specialist store.

  • Thanks guys. I'm in Brisbane and bought a new BBQ only around a year ago but it's way too big. I'm giving it to a friend and have decided to buy something less obtrusive but robust. I've read that the Webers really are the best but thought I'd ask the opinion of the savvy but shrewd members on here!

    • Just take note the the weber Q's are somewhat borderline on heat output. Meaning that you have to BBQ with the lid down to minimise heat losses.

      If you are want your steak seared at a high temperature, you are not going to get it. Otherwise a great BBQ.

    the Q's are great….really great

    we have the older Q220 - it's way big enough for the family (and do get one with the temp gauge - you need it with the Q range)

    it's a different way of BBQ'ing

    you put the lid down and keep it down, turning occasionally and you cook on a lower heat (the lid reflects the heat and it cooks from all around not just the bottom)

    Just be aware the Q is really good at roasting things but as others have said, struggles when you are doing things that need high direct heat output ie. Wanting to char or grill something. The Q is basically an oven so its a very different way of cooking.

    An alternative is to get a cheap small traditional BBQ which can take ceramic heat beads. These help distribute heat evenly on cheaper BBQs and also retain flavours from dripping. A good way to really improve a cheap BBQ and should only be around $40.

    Swear by my Weber Q. To the comment in regards to chargrill you can chargrill just need to have it on high heat for a while before to really heat up the grill. Thats how I do my steaks to give them the grill marks. The second side takes longer to grill in the lines but do no close the lid or your steak is goosed. Normally ends up medium rare once done. If you want more well done close the lid while on the second side but have it on low heat.

    Just gotta be careful you don't burn the food.

    With the lid close it really is an oven so things cook rather quickly.
