TRS claim for sunglasses... and contact lenses???

So, I'm looking to buy 2 pairs of sunnies from OPSM which come down to about $280 and if I throw in a box of contacts, it brings it to over $300. Does anyone know if I can claim on contact lenses??? Couldn't find information on the website specific to this.

Thanks in advance.

  • As long as GST has been charged, I'm sure you can…

  • I wouldn't be too confident in saying that contact lenses attract GST because it is a medical item.

I would err on the side of caution and add something that isn't a medical item to bump the total up.

A couple of glasses cases perhaps? At present your out of pocket expense would be $280 (ignoring the contacts), but if you increase your GST taxable total to $300 your out of pocket expense would become $272.

So effectively, by adding $20 to your total you're saving $8. Just remember to present all of your GST taxable items on the receipt to TRS upon leaving Australia.

    • Can confirm medical devices do attract GST.

      • +1

Item 156 of Schedule 3 to the GST Act would directly infer that prescription contact lenses are GST free.

This is on the proviso that the OP was referring to prescription contact lenses. Non-prescription contact lenses would obviously attract GST, as they possess no therapeutic benefit.

      • OMG I was wrong. I feel ashamed.
As KaptmKaos pointed out, it is GST free.
