Need advice on Car head units

Have an old 2006 model Yaris hatch without Aux or bluetooth. Looking to upgrade the head unit to install the bluetooth head unit - happy to spend 200-300 bucks to get a good one (possibly with capacitive screen ). Can you guys please recommend ?

PS: Noob when it comes to modifying anything with the cars, if its easy I will install it myself. If not, how much does it normally cost to get one installed ? Does SCA or repco does those installations ?

  • It's fiddly to install in most cars.
You'll only get a budget unit installed for $300 I reckon. $100 for the unit plus $200 for install.
Google your model and head unit replacement to try to find a guide and see if you think you have the patience and time. No special skills or tools are really required provided you have all the necessary wiring looms etc.

  • If you choose to install it yourself you'll need 3 things: The OEM plug that splits into two ISO heads ($13) and another that goes from the two ISO heads to the two Toyota OEM heads ($13). Toyota normally uses 200mm headunits, where as most 3rd party units use 180mm so you'll need a spacer ($10) if you don't want an ugly gap.

This all assumes your Yaris has a removable double DIN system, if not you'll have to buy an entire dash face from Ebay ($100).

    • Ermm, so if I buy one wrong spec part in this chain, I will be screwed :-( Do you have any recommendations on where should I get it installed from ? (Inner Melbourne suburbs or north west) ?

      • No there's nothing to be 'screwed' about, you just buy the right parts from JB or Supercheap that are labelled as Toyota and plug in the right shapes.

If you cant be stuffed go to T&N audio 182B Duke st, Braybrook 3019. Should $100.

        • Perfect. Thanks.

  • Wait for JB HiFi to have one of their 30% off sales. They had one on the weekend but only for sony stuff, they had a sony mechless bluetooth/aux in for $89. Happens every six weeks or so.

If you buy an ISO harness it's plug and play you need two one from your new head to ISO and one from ISO to 2006 Yaris - they cost about $15 each from JB/Supercheap/Repco/Autobarn or Ebay - just make sure you get the right ones…

    • Thanks, but how to confirm if it would fit my car. Most of the units listed on Jb or other stores doesnt list the compatible car models. Getting the right one is tricky bit :-)

Step 1: Take pic of current stereo setup so we can work out if it needs a fascia or not
Step 2: From there we will know if you need a) A single din stereo, b) A double din stereo, or c) A single din stereo plus din size storage pocket
Step 3: Buy harness adapters from SCA/Repco etc
Step 4: Install yourself! Get to know how to take it apart if something goes wrong, or if you wanna revert it back to stock

    • Thanks, that makes sense. I will take the photos and post here once I get home!

    • I assume you want me to take apart the existing unit and upload the photos, will do that soon. But if you just want to look at the facade, this is how it looks: https://imotorcarsearch.s3.amazonaws.com/vehicles/large/6235…

OK yep that's all I was after!

So you'd need something like this to put a single din in there. Then have a look over @ JB Hifi or similar for the head unit. Then you just need 2 wiring adapters and you're good to go!

Easy peasy. this double din unit may be a good choice..

It may have ISO connectors already. Otherwise the adaptor(s) and side plates are needed.

    • Do cars ever have ISO connectors?
I'm pretty sure that ISO connector is the industry standard term for "we can flog you $3 worth of wiring loom for $30 or you can get out your soldering iron and try soldering short leads in a confined space."

      • Yes European cars do….
