TV Buying Recommendation - Wait for Boxing Day?

Hi All,

This is my first post in this wonderful community. Also I am pretty new in Aus, doing my PhD, so this will be my first christmas+boxing day here.

I am planning to buy a smart TV. I am not in a hurry, so I can easily wait a month to catch the boxing day sales. However I am not sure what I should expect during boxing day. For example, ebay is now offering 20% off, so should I avail that opportunity or there is more chance of getting a better deal during boxing day (I know nothing can be told certainly, but just asking for your comment based on past years)? Also, if anybody can suggest which one should be better in terms of quality.

My options are:

1) LG OLED FHD 55'': $2,198 in goodguys ebay store (after 20% discount)
2) Samsung Curved UHD 200Hz 55": $1,996 in goodguys ebay store (after 20% discount)

I was thinking of LG OLED UHD (4K) 55'', but $3,995 was way beyond my budget.

There isn't much content for 4k tv's at 4k res, unless you're going to hook up a gaming PC and play games at 4k resolution.

Yes they may have upscaling etc but 4k now is what FHD used to be back in 2007/8, not much content available at that res and took about 5 years to kick in.

Save your money and get FHD

    • thanks a lot, that's very useful info for me .. I personally liked the colors of OLED, but 4K OLED is way too much. So want to buy OLED FHD, but am confused about what should I prioritize - resolution (FHD/UHD) or color (LED/OLED). So liked your input, may be settle for OLED FHD one.

And yup, I have no intention of playing any games, buying only for watching movies.

Go into store and see what looks best out of FHD LED and FHD OLED

Boxing Day sales are only for companies to sell off cheap what they over ordered for Christmas, or couldn't sell at normal prices. They don't discount much stuff they think they will sell easily. Besides, every time you turn around there is a new bigger better brighter sale on with 'never to be repeated' prices. Pick what you want, and since you can wait, wait for the price to reduce to what you think is reasonable. Given the ebay20% deals that seem regular waiting for at least 20% off seems reasonable.

    • Thanks a lot .. in that case I guess I can't expect much on LG OLED one. But yup, may be I can just wait, as I am not in a hurry.
