So Qantas is offering to match donations made with Qantas points in their online store.
29000 points gets you a $250 donation, which is matched by Qantas.
I'm not sure if you receive a tax invoice for this, I would presume you should, since qff points are a currency with open market value, but I'm not certain.
The other idea is - most people on here will buy Qantas points for 1 point per dollar (see classifieds)
So that would be $290 from selling the same number of points.
Depending on your employer, you can get 1:1 matching, with the added benefit of knowing that you can donate to anyone you want, and you'll definitely get a tax receipt for deductions.
What are people's thoughts?
You don't get issued a tax invoice for donations you "buy" from Qantas using your points. Qantas claims the tax deduction themselves.
What you do is up to you. If you make your donation using your points, it's essentially "free" (not out of pocket) because your points were free. So it's a good deed that costs you nothing. If you're never gonna use your points for anything else, then go for it.
You could try to sell your points. I've sold points before (well helped a friend sell points) and the buyer turned out to be a nice guy but you have to be careful with a transaction like that because you never know what you're gonna get.
