Great software. Haven't used it in a while so didn't know they switched to a subscription model.

  • Synergy is very good. using it for two years now

Used for one year for mac + windows

Actually you can download their daily build and use it for free because it is an open source software.

The current stable build is actually in the list of nightly builds too, if you don't like bleeding edge..
Stumbled upon it last time I went to grab it and saw they had changed to paid software.

It's worth just throwing them the $10 in my option - for the time saved compiling (keeping up with updates etc) and just for what it does / how much you will use it.

Did this software used to be free? I remember using it a few years back - specifically quicksynergy on linux and synergy on windows.

Excellent software, used it quite a bit at work a few years ago. Not really using it at the moment, but your never know,, do just signed up for a copy. Thanks poster!

If you are after another option (free) and are only sharing between Windows computers then Mouse With Out Boarders works quite well for me.

    • Wow, this is officially from Microsoft!
Why haven't they built this into Windows 10?

Mouse Without Borders was created 4 or 5 years ago by Microsoft developers in an experimental software capacity - like a bunch of programmers making up a little app for fun in their spare time. I don't know if it's officially supported by Microsoft, or whether if it had support at all - which is probably why it's not in Windows 10.

I used it a few years ago between 2 desktop PCs; one running XP and the other running 7 - it was simple but it worked beautifully. I've never used Synergy before so I don't know what it's like, but I do recommend Mouse Without Borders for no-frills control of 2 (or more) computers with only one set of keyboard and mouse.

        • I'm using it between 2 windows 10 computers (a desktop and a Surface Pro 3) and it is simple and hassle free.

        • @Tarinedier: it also shares keyboard?

synergy works better for me. sharing across linux and windows, side by side monitors.

    Company name: OzBargain

    • I just left it empty :>

They can check their referrer logs if they really want to know where the traffic is from.

This was invaluable even in beta state few years back when I was working on 3-4 PCs at a time.

  • Am I the only one around here who doesn't think it's that good? I bought (paid full price for) the pro version a pretty long time ago and I've never really been satisfied with it. It works OK most of the time but often needs restarting which is a real pain on the computer that doesn't have a keyboard and mouse plugged in. I use it for Windows-Ubuntu and Ubuntu-Ubuntu and have the same issues in both cases. I've pretty much given up using it at this point though, I just leave a K400r plugged into my other machine.

    • Yeah pretty much my experience. Works great when it does but a lot of issues start cropping up. Then it just stopped working completely at which point I gave up after spending a lot of time reinstalling it and trying to get it working.

    • Years ago it was glorious and worked well. Then it was horrible for a while. Now though I feel it's back to being pretty good.
It's pretty lame if you're running on Wifi, but through ethernet you don't notice any lag.

Similar experience here. I eventually installed tightVNC as well on the machine so I can recover things when synergy stops working.

worth looking into winswitch if you are just looking to control apps on a remote machine - its ability to integrate x apps into a 'doze desktop and disconnect and reconnect from them is quite amazing - it has been nicknamed screen for x.

    • I know what you mean. It has gotten better since they have been charging for it - more stability and frequent updates etc. Still though occasionally I have to kill the processes and relaunch.

  • Synergy is awesome, been using it for years

  • Great, was looking for something like this.

Wow, I didn't even know such a tool existed! ++++++

  • been using for a while - this is a great deal

  • Thanks, have wanted this for a while.

  • Thanks. Am exited to give it a go.

  • Thanks for this! Used to use this software before they started charging for it. While i don't have it downloaded right now, its still nice to have it. Thanks!

  • Thanks for this tool, its great for some of us who have Multiple OSs on a table.

  • I have a KVM (hardware) that does this job. I don't think i need this software but yet im still tempted to get it.

    • This software will only be useful if you have a monitor for each computer. It's essentially a "KM".

    500 Server Error now..

Edit - Have to reload a few times to establish a connection.

  • Pffff what a shit site.. crashes….

  • Couldn't get it to work between Windows 8 and Mac (Mountain Lion) so gave up.

  • Dang! So, no free electricity for a lifetime? :P

    • Hmm…I get "promotional code already used" when I try to redeem?

      • Hm, the promo code has probably expired, sorry! I'll update the post.
