When Gifting a Present That Requires Batteries, Should Batteries Be Included in The Gift?

As the title states, when you purchase and gift someone a present that requires batteries, should you include batteries with that gift - or not?

Yes - the person buying the gift should also include batteries with that gift

or

No - batteries don't have to be included, and it should be up to the recipient to source their own batteries

You want them to enjoy the gift, right?!

gonna assume your inquiring about gifts given to children, if the intent is for them to open it on the spot or while you are still around then yes. if its one of those you gave it to them early to open on Christmas/ gave it to their parents to give to them later/ mailed it to them, then no.

    • Good point, and though I suppose in hindsight the question would be more relevant for children, it could also apply to other demographics. I'd probably even suggest, in line with your comments, that children more than others would be better off with batteries.

  • Yes, even if it's just cheap batteries so they can at least use it that day.

Nothing worse than watching a happy kid opens the present and only looks disappointed when no battery.

      • Very true! Just gauging what the norm is among us OzBargainers :)

  • profound question!

If you want the receiver to be happy, then yes

  • Depends on the person, if the present is for a fellow Ozbargainer, the chances are, they will own enough Eneloops to power whatever I am buying 10 times at least (and probably would prefer using Eneloops).

That said, I'd probably buy them batteries unless I am absolutely certain that they have batteries to at least use it right after they've opened the present. I personally think it's an additional touch that makes the present feel more special, because presents are special because they show that you care about the recipients. Buying a battery so that they can use the present right away would show that you care.

    Necessary - no.
Nice and thoughtful gesture - yes.

  • What if your gift is a battery charger?

    • Well, you should give them something to charge.

  • Includes Free Eneloops

    Definitely for kids.
For adults, not so much. If it is, for example, a lantern for camping given at Xmas, I think it would be fine for an adult to get no batteries (assuming the weren't camping the next day or something).
But an RC car for a 10yro with no batteries would assuredly end in tears.

  • it's a thoughtful thing to do.

remember it's the thought that counts ;-)

  • I'd also suggest going one step further and make sure the batteries are already installed in the gift before wrapping. also if they are rechargeable like a remote controlled car they should be charged up ready to go. especially for the young and old.
