These are awesome for a kids laptop, or if you want something nice and portable for doing Google Docs. They boot up insanely fast, are really snappy, and at this price they're a steal.

    • +2

i know. Im going to buy one. Ill keep it at work and use it with my data sim

      • -4

Why would you need a chrome book at work !!

  • Hey EC is there a 13 inch one for sale? I'm afraid this is too small for mum to watch her soaps.

  • It is showing as $99 USD for me, is that right?

    • +1

yes. Convert to AUD after adding shipping cost

    • +2

      $99 + Shipping

Mine comes to $115.35 USD shipped.

      • they have updates the shipping yay

  • Yes. Shipping for me costs US$16.35 (Vic). Using Amazon's rate, it adds up to A$165.44 (should be cheaper if you choose to get billed in USD).

  • So this would be an American plug I suppose? Would voltage here an issue here.

    • +3

from my experience the power supplies are 110v to 240v so ok from AUS

You will just need a plug adaptor

    • +2

The power supply is 100-240v. Scroll down the page and look at the questions section. Just type in voltage or 240 in the search box and see that the question has been asked. So Like easternculture said, you just need the plug adapter

      • Okay thanks, i'll remember to get one of those in dick smith.

      • Most if not all laptops have power cables that work in most 1st world countries due to the idea of them being portable enough to take overseas

  • Thanks for sharing this. I've always wanted to try a Chromebook, and this is a very cheap way to try it out. It worked out to around $158 with a 28 Degrees Card.

  • Tempting.. how many GBs of storage are you left with after the OS etc is on the chrome book?

    • The OS doesnt use much storage, You should have just over 15GB .

You can use the free 100GB google storage to store document, files, photos

    • The OS takes up 7GB, you will have 9GB left.

You can expand the memory with a micro SD card or use the free 100GB Google storage for 2 years. After which it's 15GB free, additional storage requires subscription.

NB: There are other free storage options when your 2 years expire.

If only amazon prime existed for australia…

  • I think I'm going to bite the bullet, how long will delivery take? I'm going to move in less than 3 weeks.

    • They state 9-12 business days with the standard shipping option so might just get there in time. All of my Amazon orders usually arrive within 2 weeks (To WA).

    • +1

Have it sent to a friend if youre really worried. A pack of beer would do the trick.

maybe you can use a parcel locker as your address

      • Hey thanks for the suggestion. Ended up using the parcel collect at post office near my place. It's 10 days collection, whereas the parcel locker is within 48 hours.

  • what games can you run on these?

    • +5

minesweeper, solitaire… pinball if your lucky. You dont buy a chromebook to play video games

    • +1

Web based Flash or WebGL games? Alternatively install crouton, install Ubuntu, install Steam for Linux and there are heaps of games available, although the CPU is on slow side.

    • i was hoping to run android games. im not familiar with chrome os, is there an emulator to run android games?

      • you can install ubuntu and enjoy some steam games too. I think it should perform similar to something with intel z3735F Atom. You can check youtube for how games will run.

        EDIT

But Games would run worse due to poor support for Ubuntu.

  • Just bought one, thanks EC. Amazon estimated delivery by 17 Dec. Nice Christmas present. I asked to be billed in USD. Even after credit card currency conversion fee I think i saved a couple of dollars.

  • I've always liked the idea of a Chromebook, but I don't think I'd ever use one unfortunately.

  • i think it's this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riua2YlBWxk

my wife is going to freaking kill me

  • oops didnt read

Tempting, but I just know it'll gather dust somewhere after playing around with it for a day. Thought it might come in handy as a second more portable device but it's actually larger than my 12" macbook in all dimensions & heavier. Though I'm sure it'll be useful to some.

  • +1

It seems like it's sold out?

    • +1

      Yep.

      • says its in stock for me

        • +1

Nup, $99 priced ones are history.

  • Seems fairly tempting just to put Ubuntu on and use for Media while when out
instead of taking my Heavy workstation laptop.

  • Back in stock guys.

    • seems like you can't ship to australia now

  • The gogo passes will come in handy on some upcoming Delta flights in the US.

  • Hi, I was going to buy this for my mum so that she can use to stream and watch videos. Do you guys recommend chromebook for it?.

    • too late. its over 200 dollars now. This was good device but for video streaming purpose there are cheaper alternatives. Android tablet can get that job done.

    • Yeah, i got this chromebook for my mum to stream videos, youtube, netflix.

  • I snoozed, I lost - We're sorry. The item Acer Chromebook, 11.6-Inch, CB3-111-C670 (Intel Celeron, 2GB, 16GB SSD, White) is no longer available from the seller you selected.

  • Keep checking guys I just bought one at 6 15 am

    167 usd now :(

  • USD$165 now, I missed the train, I'll catch it the next time around, a chromebook is insanely useful.

  • Train has arrived,its back to 99 USD at1400

  • Seems Amazon prices bounce around a fair bit. Now @au156 who can resist; ordered

EC always finding me things you legend.

  • Ordered one

  • Wow, that was fast. Mine arrived today! I'm typing on it now. The one thing I was worried about - the screen - looks way better in person than I was expecting. Now to much around with ChromeOS and see what I think. Thanks again OP.

    • What delivery option did you select? That's pretty quick for shipping all the way from US.

      • I just used the cheapest delivery option, and it came via i-parcel. It's probably the fastest I've ever received a package from Amazon.

        • Cool. I bought the ASUS Flip and Amazon expected delivery to be on 11 December. However I just checked the i-parcel using the tracking number and it's Out for delivery today!

    • How's your netbook now that you have a chance to use it? Mine is still in America :)

So far I'm really enjoying it. I've only had it for 2 days, so I've still got my rose-coloured glasses on, but my overall first impressions are very positive.

I used it at work today, and was pretty impressed with the performance and use-case (and the outstanding battery life). I use Google Docs at work for meetings, notes, etc, and my current set up is an iPad Air 2 with a separate Bluetooth keyboard. This set up works, but has a few drawbacks and has always felt limited. Using the Chromebook today, I found I could achieve my same work a lot faster. My typing was faster and more accurate, correcting mistakes and moving around a document/spread sheet was a lot fast, and browsing of the web was more enjoyable because you are getting the desktop web. One difference, though, is that my iPad Air 2 gets push notifications for text, email, etc, whereas this doesn't seem to be possible for the Chromebook (not that I was expecting it too). It's also easier to charge my iPad at work, and my white Chromebook certainly stood out!

Here are my current PROS and CONS for the Acer Chromebook 11:

        PROS

        • the screen is better than I was expecting (it's definitely not in the league of iPads, Samsungs or other IPS panels, but it looks fantastic for a budget PC. I was considering the Lenovo 100S, but the screen on that is terrible compared to the Acer Chromebook)
        • the battery is superb!! I am amazed with the battery life on this thing. I can't get over how much I am impressed with the battery life. It easily surpasses my mid-2012 Macbook Air.
        • it's pretty fast all around, especially considering the specs. I only notice slow down when I have 6+ tabs open, including having YouTube open. (I think this is more a RAM problem than processor. 4GB in a Chromebook would probably be perfect)
        • the keyboard is pretty nice too. I'm still getting used to the Chrome OS specific keys, but overall it feels nice to type on.
        • the trackpad works really well and is quite large. Scrolling is as good as any mac I've tried.
        • although the body of the laptop doesn't look as good in real life as it does in the product photos, it still feels very solid for such a cheap laptop. There are no creaks in the plastic either.
        • I'm still getting used to Chrome OS. So far, I like it for my intended use for this laptop - using Google Docs at work, and browsing the web and YouTube at home.
        • the WiFi is crazy good in this laptop. It's by far got a stronger antenna than my iPhone 6s Plus and iPad Air 2.
        • the speakers are actually pretty good, and loud. Much better than I was expecting. I would probably say that the speakers in the Chromebook sounds louder than my iPad Air 2.
        • the output from the 3.5mm audio jack is also very, very loud.
        • Google Docs seems to work fine in offline mode, and everything just syncs again when you re-connect to the internet.
        • this thing cold boots fast, and wakes from sleep within 1-2 seconds. Very nice.

        CONS:
I only have a couple of cons:

        • the keyboard letter keys make nice sounds when you type on them, but my spacebar key is alot 'clickier' than the rest of the keys and makes a noticeably annoying clicky sound. (I know, it's a HUGE deal)
        • it's the same with the track pad. I like tapping the track pad (not clicking it), and when you just tap the bottom half of the track pad it makes a sounds because there must be an air gap between the top of the track pad the bottom click mechanism. I don't know if this is specific to my laptop, or on everyone. I am half tempted to open it and see if I can alter it…
        • the actual click on the trackpad is REALLY loud too.
        • I tethered my iPhone to my Chromebook for internet access. I would've liked the Chromebook to hold the connection, even when in sleep mode. It's not a big deal, it just means I need to re-open the settings->hotpost section of my iPhone each time I turned on the Chromebook.
And that's it! Really minor complaints.

At the end of the day, I can't believe this computer only cost me about $135 AUD (after credits and other promotions). It's an absolute steal.

If I end up sticking with this laptop long term, I'll probably dream of three key changes: 4GB RAM, a nice IPS panel, and backlit keys. (But then it'd probably cost $300-500).

        I hope yours arrives soon!

PS. Sorry, this comment is a bit of a read lol!

        • Thanks for the detailed review. Haha, man you are making me crave it! Funny thing is we have the almost same number of devices: iPad air 2 and same 2012 mac air, so the comparison was great.

If u stick to it long term, does that mean not using the macbook air or buying a new model mac anymore?

I really like our model, it's bloody hardy and the most reliable laptop I ever had.Just a bit slow on ram. Here's hoping they will release a macbook air in gold, that will be aa timely upgrade!

        • @Cronut: Haha, it's funny we have the same devices. Nah, this device won't be replacing my MacBook Air at all. I routinely tell people that my MacBook Air mid-2012 (my first ever Mac - and still my only Mac) is the best computer I've ever owned. The only thing letting it down these days is battery life. I'm lucky to get 3 hours out of it. I agree, I've been waiting for ages for a proper upgrade with a better screen, more RAM and new design (I'm a bit worried about how much it will cost…). I'm also not 100% sold on the MacBook 12", which I think is too compromised (and way too expensive). But I'm also not comparing the Chromebook to my MacBook Air, and they aren't really competing for 'use-case' with me :)

I see the Chromebook as an 'much enhanced' iPad Air 2 experience for school, work and casual browsing. I don't really see it as a proper 'computer' to replace a Mac or a Windows Laptop for all other uses (maybe it could be for a school or uni student?). So I'm not really comparing the Chromebook to the MacBook Air (except for browsing and YouTube, and the huge difference in battery life - which wouldn't be a big deal for newer MacBook Air's). It also won't replace my iPad Air 2 (which is better for movies and a bit of gaming). For me, the Chromebook slots into a small section of my work life for portable computing on the go that's light and fast, and web browsing and YouTube at home. I will also prefer having the full desktop internet experience, and I significantly prefer a physical keyboard.

One thing I forgot to mention above, internet browsing on the Chromebook is very fast. But for some content-heavy web pages, you have to wait until the webpage has finished loading before you can scroll and move around smoothly. This isn't a problem, just a slight different between iOS/Mac and the Chromebook.

Like I said, I still have rose-coloured glasses on. I don't want to build up too much hype, because your MacBook, Windows computer or Desktop are still a lot faster and more capable than this little Chromebook. And the iPad Air 2 feels faster, is lighter and more portable, and has a better screen and a more content-rich ecosystem.

BUT, I'm still amazed and very happy with the performance and quality of the device for the cost. $94.99USD is a unbelievable for this package! When you receive yours, every time you find something that disappoints you or puts a dent in you hype, remember the price!

PS. 1 more wish for future version - I would love it if this Chromebook charged via MicroUSB or USB-C, not proprietary cords.

  • You also get 1 year free unlimited amazon cloud. I am still waiting for laptop, but received email about storage. It's worth $59.99, I wouldn't personally buy it as there are cheaper options out there.

  • Anyone's laptop still in aussie customs?

  • For the next 1.5 weeks it seems. Slowest leg of a 2wk journey by far .. AC.

    • Does yours say

      Latest update: Thursday, Dec 3
11:08 AM Initiated customs clearance process

      • Ordered 27th and departed US only yesterday; ETA WED 16 DEC.

        • Ordered on the 26th, arrived on the 8th. I can't pick it up till next week though.

Can I ask where you got your American adapter from? Would bunnings be the cheapest place?

        • @Cronut: bunnings quicker. But I had AU $2.79 delivered.

        • @daver: thanks daver but do take caution with the plug that is imported from china. http://m.qt.com.au/news/woman-dies-holding-laptop-nsw-after-…

Nothing against chinese plugs but at least the plugs in bunnings that are made in china are covered by Australian consumer law if shit were to go down.

        • @Cronut: probably would sleep easier knowing a $5 adapter existed. Have it on RCD protected at the wall though, no meltdowns.
Heeded that message IRT corn bulbs though.

        • +1

          @daver: @Cronut:
It's a bit more expensive, but you could just buy one of these and not worry about adaptors: http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/comsol-male…
You could probably find a cheaper one at DSE or on eBay.

        • @S3ISOR: thanks, their Jackson iec c7 looks good for a spare to have around.

        • +3

@daver: Sorry, I provided the wrong link. The Acer Chromebook use a 3-pin adaptor: http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/comsol-male…
I don't why the first link I copied in my previous post goes to a 2 pin adaptor, I didn't even open that page !

        • @S3ISOR: legend, thanks for saving me a trip and expense of buying an adapter. My old windows laptop has one of those. Didn't think you could use it that way.

        • +1

@Cronut: No problems :). I was surprised when I saw the cable. Haven't seen one in years. Here's a photo of he actual adaptor: http://m.imgur.com/LKPOAI0

        • +1

@S3ISOR: wow thanks for the photo:)

      • Has yours arrived yet? Any thoughts?

      • Nope, busy waving their scanning wands over it.

        • Received on 11th, in New South Wales. StarTrack. Very good.
Time to activate free online clouds.

      • Ordered 26th, shipped 27th and arrived yesterday
        iparcel hasn't updated since
        7/12 Processed at transit hub
so i wouldn't trust it's online tracking for any real time status updates

Had a quick play last night; successfully installed Crouton then went back to Chrome OS and installed some apps
Quite happy with it so far

  • Ah ozbargain, making me spend money I don't need to simply because of the bargain.

Anyway I'm selling mine for cost price see my post here if interested. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/223976

    Arriving Fri, Dec 18
    *** Not yet shipped ***

    :((

(Also looks like the price has gone up again)

    • Jesus that is unlucky. You should have tried earlier to contact amazon they are really good about refunding shipping or upgrading you to the fastest shipping free of charge. I got mine on the 7th liking it more than I expected for browsing and typing. Also installed linux on it.

      • I was wondering why you put Linux on it? Is it a dual-boot set-up? A quick Google seems to tell me that Linux is good for VLC and some applications?
PS. I'm still really enjoying mine too. I've been using it a work and at home a lot more than I expected. Should've bought two haha…

        • Yeah just to play around with it not really for any particular purpose. I want to install elementary os on it but it seems difficult according to what I have read online. You can use the android version of vlc that is what I did. Install arc (android runtime for chrome) welder from the store then use the apk that you download and it should work. I also tried a few other android apps like pocket casts which run albeit quite slowly.

        • @gottacatchemall: Fair enough. For such a cheap tablet mucking around is part of the fun.
Thanks for the heads up on ARC Welder. It's funny you mention Pocket Casts - I was trying to listen to podcasts the other day (I've paid for both their iOS and Android app), but you have to pay another $9 to use the web app. I'll give ARC Welder a go.

        • Yeah I did not really want to pay that much for a web app as I already own multiple android devices so would not really use it much. I just used the apk with arc welder and it works. Even logged in with my account its usable but not something I would do all the time.

      • Live chatted them and "as one time exception" they changed "priority shipping without shipping fee".

ETA is now December 17 hahahaha.

        • (arrived monday)

Quite happy with the unit - quite attractive, large responsive touchpad, solid keyboard, sound and camera aren't terrible. Being used to 'retina' style displays the screen is a bit jarring but once I'm concentrating on something I don't notice it. And for the price it's great! Haven't had to charge it.

Going to give it a good go on ChromeOS but will probably eventually put something else on it,

          Very happy!

  • Very happy as I'm no expert finally loaded Linux as well to get Kodi so works great as a QuasiTablet with benefits
