Home Broadband - MyNetFone, TPG, Exetel or Optus Cable?

Hoping for advice on choice of ISP. I have been with Optus Cable since 2001 but want a cheaper plan (currently $70 internet+phone).

My exchange information:

http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/viewexchange.php?Exchange=D…

https://www.mybroadband.communications.gov.au/ data ID no. DNCT:82
HFC and ADSL only, A for both availability and quality

I have narrowed it down to these choices:

Exetel $40 300GB $130 setup no contract
TPG $40 150GB $60 setup 12 months
MyNetFone $50 500GB+phone $100 setup no contract

Own home and can commit to contract but all these ISPs have bad reviews/reputation on whirlpool so not sure if I should switch, not great at troubleshooting. I can stay with Optus Cable and I am ok with them but $20+ more every month. So what do you think?

Thanks in advance

  • Love TPG, Just don't ever call them! Then your fine!

  • have you checked with neighbours to see who and what speed they are getting? (if speed is important to you, can vary…)

    • no, speed is not important. 0.5MB/s is ok for me.

      • that is very slow especially for youtubing, video…
then go with TPG I think should be ok

      • Slow speed especially if you want at least 150GB.

      • Dodo then. It's the cheapest, no question.

  • I have been with exetel for 5-6 years. Had to reconnect/sign up three or four times due to having to cancel my service and move around a bit for work, but never had any issues whatsoever with the connection/sign up process.

Never really had any issues at all, although for a small period there was some speed issues which I picked up on at peak times, i submitted a help request thingo, it was investigated and they told me it was on their providers end (optus) and nothing they could do. but within a month it picked up/was fixed, so i'm guessing optus fixed the bottlenecking/bandwidth issue at peak times, whether that was from exetel complaining to them or not i have no idea.
But the service I got from them when I contacted them was prompt, easy and good which I actually didn't expect and was pleasantly surprised.

But overall, I have been very happy with them. Easy set up, no issues. Fairly good speeds (13-15 Mbps download on ADSL2+), though I'm only about 1km from my exchange. I would definitely recommend exetel based on my experience though.

  • If you can pay another $20, doesn't TPG offer $60/m for ADSL and phone line?

I'm not with any of these, but have been looking at TPG. BUT - I have been with Exetel in the past. From what I can tell, little has changed. They're a real pain in the neck.

They buy new plans in bulk, put you on a contract, and if you download a lot, they tell you goodbye when your contract ends. By that time they don't provide your plan anymore either. So they send an email basically saying: "Your have two choices. This plan for $x and pay to 'upgrade' - or, we'll leave you on your current plan but penalise you $y extra a month to stay there."

So because you get less with Y - you go with X.

People that stick with them say, "I don't mind - I'm getting a better deal each time." But instead of paying $40 a month, you wind up paying $50/$60/m whatever - after their continuous upgrade fees.

Even their 'unlimited' (if they still offer that)… download 'too much' and you're out when your contract ends. It's like opening an all-you-can-eat buffet - then exclude someone from entry the next time they come because they ate more than others do. Most ISPs have enough brains to realise, for every 'heavy' downloader, there's going to be several small ones.

And their definition of 'too much' has no discernable pattern. You read on WP people that get kicked out for downloading half their quota - but others download all of it and keep going, but get left alone.

Their constant upgrade fee grabbing, and uncertainty of how much was too much - were why I left - preferred to pay more - but actually wound up paying less, due to not having to pay the constant 'upgrade' fees. And none of the stress wondering if I would be kicked out.

Also consider Dodo and ClubTelco. I've been with CT for a few years now. $40 or $60 unlimited depending on your location. I'm currently looking at TPG because of their unlimited $60 inc. phone. But I currently have ADSL2+ and TPG can only provide ADSL1. Maybe if I move…

  • So what's the difference between optus and optus cable?
