I got the 48" for this price over a year ago. I was extremely impressed with this Soniq TV. The picture is not fantastic, certainly nowhere as sharp as my LG LED (55", but cost 4 times as much). The BIG plus with these Soniq TV's is that the built in media player will play ANYTHING. Literally have not found a single file format that it wouldn't play natively. MP4, MKV, AVI etc. All played. It even decodes DTS and DD. Worth the price just for this feature alone.

  • Anyone with this tv know what the input lag is like? Does it play well with the ps4, PC or xbox one? After buying the 40 inch dick smith tv with awful input lag i will never repeat the same mistake.

I've played around 20 hours of Fallout 4 on the panel, haven't noticed actual input lag with a controller. Response time is advertised at 8ms which seems about right i have used 5ms IPS monitors and it doesn't seems much worse than that even with a mouse. Though there is a noticeable difference with a mouse between this and my 1ms monitor.

      Its definitely not awful though.

      • So it means that now days Soniq is ok with input lag now? Awesome.

I have an older Soniq 3D tv and its input lag is a very noticeable ~100ms from the photo tests. Ok for RPG but definitely not ideal for timing critical games like technical fighters and and FPS.

  • Dicksmith has direct led 41.5" for $379 and $20 off coupon on website.

Soniq has IPS, not sure what DSE one is. But DSE has Direct led, cheaper but slightly smaller.

55" is reaching around $499. Not much deal here unless you're after a smaller screen.

    • Where can i find one for that price?

      • Hopefully this weekend, or worst case, Boxing Day.

Otherwise make friends with staff of companies related to generic TV brands. :)

    • Smaller screens are MUCH better for non-HD content, especially old VHS tapes or poorly mastered DVDs, or normal SD TV channels. Considering most of my collection consists of that, the 42" size for me seems to be the sweet-spot. I kinda regret buying a Soniq 55" last year (it cost $399 at the time) because while it looks fantastic with Blurays and 720p video streams, anything less than 720p looks pretty awful. Nearly everything looks great on our 42" Soniq. Sometimes the wife and I switch rooms because an old DVD just looks so much better on the smaller screen.

You can only scale up a crappy image so much until it starts looking bad. If you're going larger than about 42-43" you probably want to spend more on something with better scaling, as most of the cheap 46"+ sets have pretty poor image processing. Results will vary but some of them look awful. This 43" is probably pretty good, I wish I'd bought similar instead last year. Spending an extra $100 last year gave me something that looks worse than my 42" Soniq.

Some 46"+ TVs do a fantastic job of upscaling. My friend's Sanyo 46" made an old Robocop DVD look like it was filmed in real life, in fact it actually looked a bit TOO real (they call it the "soap opera effect") but it did cost over $1,000. You won't get that processing under $500 yet.

      • You can tweak the picture to some extent with the picture settings to some extent but like you said, the bigger the tv the more the low resolution media source become obvious.

Thanks OP. Purchased this evening to replace our broken TV in bedroom. Picture is great and as others have said sound is average but for the bedroom more than adequate for us. Only other hassle I had was the screws from Samsung wall mount did not fit so had to run around a bit to find some that would and improvise somewhat to make it work but now it's all done I am very happy!!

  • I'm not in a rush to buy a TV, but would like one. Would it be better if I waited until after Christmas or is this as good as I'll get? I'm actually looking for a 32" FHD TV but $399 is the highest I'm able to go.

    • If you're in no rush I would wait. Though I doubt Soniq branded TVs are going to drop much after Christmas. I've always found it hard to find 32" FHD TVs for some reason.

Thanks, I went in and had a look today and it is actually smaller than I had imagined. I might go back tomorrow and pick it up since as you said, and I also asked someone there it doesn't look like I'll be getting anything cheaper except for possibly boxing day and I don't have the kind of tenacity to go shopping on boxing day.

I ended up going back and buying this tv. As I said before, it is quite light and thin, borders are less than 1" so the entire tv is maybe around 44" diagonal including the borders. Software is not pretty but it works. Took a bit of tweaking to lower the red color, I referred to this: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2209158.

The USB function is fine, but will depend on what videos you have. i would definitely still be plugging something in because I have lots of videos with H.265 compression.

So far today it's been a good experience and I don't regret spending this money. Now to get a console to play on!

    • hows it been going mate with the tv? thinking about buying one for my mum she still using a 50 inch CRT from like 20 years ago

      • Still going strong, it looks fantastic and people can't believe that it only cost $399. Make sure you calibrate it when you set it up though.

        • Just noticed your comment on calibrating the tv? Bought a soniq just recently and was wondering how I go about doing that?

        • @draistlin: I followed some instructions on this link http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2209158. I used the instructions to get into the service menu to reduce the colour saturation and sharpness, then adjusted according to my taste.

Ok so I purchased this tv yesterday and a there was some sort of buzzing noise coming from it. I returned that one and picked up a new one which was the same model and this one seems to do it as well. It kinda helps out when you change the energy saving mode to high but you can still hear it. Anyone else have this problem?

Also they advertise the tv as a E43V15B but when you go to menu > option > version info it shows the software version as a E43V15A. Is that supposed to be like that.

    Thanks guys.

    • have the same issue! let me know if you find out >.<

  • I bought this TV from JB-HIFI not long ago for $399. I was doing research on it as I was looking for a cheap TV to play PS4 on and to watch movies/tv shows, there was alot of comments on ozbargain and here on whirlpool but nothing that sold me completely (although I ended up buying it anyway) so I figured I'd post up my own opinion with a few pictures.

I also figured there would be alot of people in the same boat as me wanting a cheap tv, large size, decent picture/sound and played PS4/Xbox One with no lag.

    I've taken some photos below

Keep in mind this is my personal experience and although I can tell the difference between this TV and say a 4K LG 60" LCD I still think this is a great TV for the price.

Set-up: Fine, really easy and with the frame being surprisingly thin
Picture: Needs abit of work but looks great out of the box, if you're playing PS4 I'd recommend lowering the "Sharpness"
PS4: IMO it looks great, I haven't personally felt any lag and I've come from a Samsung 27" LED S27A950D 120hz
Movies: Played a few blurays and they look great as well
Accessories: Remote and menus can be a little slow, but no real complaints (you can try it in store)
Sound: Definitely the biggest gripe (my gf cant tell) but I find the sound a little tinny and would preferrably like to hook up some generic Logitech X230 speakers.. Anyone know how to go about this?

That's basically it really, any questions feel free to ask me but I definitely would like some help with the speakers if possible!

    Thanks!
