Found iPhone 6, what to do?

Okay, as per title, I found iPhone 6 on the street, the battery is almost flat and I don't have iPhone charger.

What to do now?

If by the time the battery flat, the owner is not ringing me, what can I do with this iPhone?

UPDATE: Okay, I managed to purchase iPhone charger from local shop (as suggested below), and the owner called this morning and I returned the iPhone. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Buy a cheap charger online and see who's phone is it or hand it to the police.

    • +2

Sorry, How can you identify who's phone is it? You can't even unlock it…

      • +3

normally Apple fan boy/girl would have "find my iPhone app". Owner can send you message or delete phone even it's locked.

        • +2

I fail to see how an Apple fan boy/girl will have the find my iPhone app. All iPhones/Macs/ipads have this app.

      • +6

If it's locked and they ring the phone you can still answer the call and tell them you found the phone.

      • +19

press the home button and say "call my mom / wife/ husband" and it should call them and you can than explain the situation

      • +4

If it is on, then the owner can call the phone to make contact with you to arrange its return

    • +30

While handing to police is the "right" thing to do, I strongly doubt they would actively do anything to return it to the owner. You'd get sighs and huffs while they punch in the details and then it would be thrown in a drawer.

OP: Good on you for buying a charger.

      • +1

If I lost my phone and it wasn't running, I would check with some local police stations

        • What if someone else had already picked it up and dumped it some distance away?

        • @LoopyLou: I said that I would check some local police stations, just because it might not be there doesn't mean I wouldn't check.

        • -3

@The Land of Smeg: What if someone else had already picked it up and dumped it some distance away?

        • +3

@LoopyLou: How would I know that and how does that stop me from checking with the Police?

          Mod: Removed personal attack

        • +1

police dump,in draw and wait for people to ask…. they don't take out the sim and call the telcos who owns the phone…. which is easy but requires effort and taking ownership of the problem.

you would have bettte chances at an Apple Store from serial number they can get the users apple account and contact them but that also involves them taking ownership of the problem.

      • +2

Why buy a charger when you can buy an apple iPhone/iPad lightning to USB lead (Office works for $5)?
Its the same as supplied with the phone and you can plug it in to your PC or any other (Android) charger with a USB port and it will charge fine.

        What a miserable, snarky comment.

What would you realistically expect the police to do?

Someone does the "right thing" and brings a lost phone into a station. At what point does it become viable/worthwhile for the police to add a time-consuming investigation to their other daily tasks? Someone has to evaluate the worth of the handed-in phone. Is it worth $10.00? $100? $1000? $100,000? How much valuable police time should be allocated? How many officers? Ten minutes? Two hours? A week? One officer? A whole investigation team?

How should this be prioritised? Moved up ahead of assaults? Rapes? Frauds? Graffiti? Traffic violations?

Your "sighs and huffs" comment suggests you feel police would be delinquent if they didn't drop everything there and then and start a major task force investigation.

And when your house is broken into, and your dog is kidnapped for ransom, and you call the local cop shop demanding action, and they tell you: "Sorry sir, all our officers are currently investigating lost and found mobile phones. We can send someone out to you in four or five days." Will you be happy then?

        Less snarky then perhaps?

I feel sad when people take the time to compose these long comments then they get voted down. Shame.

I can't comment on the validity of what you wrote but your time and effort was rejected :(

I found a phone and returned it to the owner. They rang me whilst I was taking it to the Police Station. Go with Karma take it to the cops.

        • +5

          i'm tracking 3 found mobiles and 3 returns :)

Honestly if you really want to find the owner - take out the sim Card
You have the provider - call the ISP - tell them the sim serial number. The carrier will then have a mobile number and find associated numbers to the account and presto

Failing that tell the ISP to call a number on the bill and done

If you want me to do it - PM me

        • +1

          @Peannut:

But it's an iphone you can't just take the sim out you need that apple contraption to remove sim. the OP doesn't have apple

        • +3

paper clip or pin can be used to remove sim……. the contraption in the box just comes with their Designed in California mystique .

      • Kinda like when you give Lost Dog to RSPCA.
Except that they start to kill them 1 by 1 if there is no claimer

        • yea the police just sell them after a while…

        • -1

          @Settero:
Fairly sure the finder used to be able to take ownership of the found item if owner didnt come forward to claim it after X months? Is this no longer the case?

        • @Settero: cannot sell the phone due to personal information stored. they will be destroyed eventually if no owner located. You wouldnt want someone finding your personal files / photos from your phone would you? dont think a wipe actually wipes a phone either.

        • @lethalmoney:
really ? might want to let them know that then… because they do.
as to if you get to keep it if its unclaimed after x months , no clue, but i definitely saw a few at the last auction i went to this year.

        • @Settero:

Fair point, there is always some bad apple everywhere I reckon.
Dodgy police always try to make profit.

Unfortunately since we're "fat-spoiled,sufficient and content" we don't have that much motivation to steal and sell unlike yank who I reckon mostly struggle with economy

Also I strongly assume that Administration will found out if you steal a phone as the Phone-Finder will fill the Lost Form and it will go to the database.

If there is no claimer after X months. Perhaps they might re-format the phone and sell it. Not sure if the money goes to individual pocket or government's fund.

        • @Settero:

When was this? wouldn't have been recently in Victoria.. Otherwise that's a boo boo

        • by then that time the IMEI has been blocked because owner wants new sim and doesn't want finder calling 1900 numbers or downloading movies, so you can't use as phone anymore in Australia, but can sell overseas, so all you can do is reset to factory defaults iand use as iPod touch or tv remote.

      • +1

I had found a Samsung Phone a while back. It was locked and I couldn't call the owner so I handed it to the police. Then got a call back to let me know they had found the owner. I had decided to stay anonymous so they never disclosed my details to the owner.

  • +4

    lol at 3rd option

  • +21

Or, just hand it to the Police and they will find the owner easy.

    • This is a joke right?

    • +2

Yeah, people who negged loopylou. The police do not care less about a phone. It is not 1875

      • +1

1875 Police didn't much care either considering the telephone wasn't invented until 1876

        • +2

exactly my point. Can you imagine the excitement of an iphone in 1875?

        • +1

the 1870 Android would still be superior

      • +5

I lost my phone a couple of years ago and someone handed it into north Sydney police station. The police sent me an email to come pick it up. So yeah they do and did in this case

        • In your case details were available for them to contact you. If you've got a locked phone you can't get into, it's going to get tossed in a drawer and sold in a bulk lot public auction somewhere down the track.

You should see the bulk lots of phones that Cityrail auctions off every year. Boxes of them. It's a phone, not wallet, not a baby.

        • +2

@snook: I don't know about iOS but on Android you can put a message on the lock screen, so I have my name and address displayed.

        • +2

          @MrBlank:
Id recommend a contact number instead. For your own security.

    • +5

I lost my phone a year ago and it was handed into the police. They somehow managed to call a friend from it (it was run over multiple times) and advised my friend that they had it at x station (VIC), collected next day. - So all of this negatively towards the police is ill place.

  • +12

Take it to the carrier's nearest store (or take out the SIM to get the SIM card number and call carrier to tell them you've found it)

  • I lost my iPhone in IKEA Rhodes…

    • +1

      Unfortunately I didn't find it there… Sorry

      • +1

that would have been so epic!

        • Legend…. Wait for it… Dary

    • +16

Usually it's behind the sofa… in which case, what an unfortunate place to lose it.

      • +2

Or dropped in the toilet, in which case it would be fine given IKEA toilets aren't plumbed up.

      • +1

        But which Sofa?

        • Dumphk or Stipud

  • +16

Heard this mentioned today, use Siri to ask 'Who does this phone belong to?' or similar, and it'll point to their Facebook

Or ask Siri to call mum or dad

    • +3

Locked phone can ask siri?, just double click? (lol, obviously I'm not an apple person)

      • +3

Yeah, Siri works even when it's locked.

        • +2

Only if that specific option is enabled.

      • +3

Yes, This is a good idea. You hold home button in!

    • +1

      This!

    • +13

Siri just told me that she 'doesn't know who this iPhone belongs to".

And here I thought that we had a special bond.

      • +4

Perhaps Siri went out with Android and Windows…what a complicated relationships…haha

        • +1

Watched the movie "Her" last night… similar storyline.

      • +10

User: "Siri, who do you belong to?"

        Siri: "Cortana"

User: "Wh…You…I didn't know you swung that way"

        Siri: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

    • +1

Good advice, I recommend all iPhone owner's to set up their personal information on their phone under:

Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > My Info (choose the contact that you've created for yourself, this can be done via the Contacts app.)

This will allow people to access your personal information via the above method.

EDIT: Siri can also be accessed by saying 'Hey Siri' (if the owner has this setting enabled) if the home button is broken or not working.

If I rob the 7-11, but wear a balaclava, will that be ok?

      • That goes from 1 month of jail to 1 decade instantly

    • +3

U just want it don't ya!

    • maling hp.

    • If we really desperate for $$ we can lend you some

  • +11

If you don't know how to work out the owner then I suggest you hand it to your nearest police station.

  • +7

    take it to the police.

  • +8

    Try telling siri to
    Call my wife
    Call my husband
    Call my mum
    Etc

    • +10

You start talking into the other person's phone and ask siri to "call my girlfriend". Then your own mum answers the phone. Awks.

      • +2

You start talking into the other person's phone and ask siri to "call my girlfriend". Then your own girlfriend answers the phone. LOL

  • +73

I cant believe you have to ask. What is wrong with people today?

      • +68

A legit question would have at least had the option of "attempt to find owner"

      • +53

No, it's not s legit question. The right thing to do is obvious (hand it to the police) but you clearly want to steal it, and want to justify your theft by getting others to approve it. You are a coward and a terrible person. Hand it to the police, you don't need a thread and quiz to ask how to be a decent human being.

        • +1

@televisi: no, you should have just taken it to the police in the first place like a decent, law abiding human being. Instead, you wanted to steal it, and hoped the oz bargain community would support your decision. Clearly you have no intention of doing the right thing, and are just going to keep it. Enjoy the ride on the karma bus when it arrives

        • karma would be that if you loose your phone other people would also not take to police station ……… or the police station that you walk into…….. see which carrier the sim is with and drop it in their store……. with privacy laws there are limits as to what police and can't do and carriers can and can't disclose to,other than the owner, and I'm sure there would be a tedious procedure that police go through before a carrier will tell them the phone number of the sim or the owners name address, etc

this ain't a criminal investigation so there are limits in what info is shared due to privacy legislation.

  • Do not let the battery drain and the phone turn off. Once the phone is restarted you cannot use Siri.

Go out and buy a lightning cable, I am sure the owner will reimburse you the cost.

  • +47

scumbag OP has no intention of trying to return it. Not even an attempt.

    What a knob.

      • +5

        Siri, Call mum. done.

      • +1

        We've told u how u noob

      • +2

You don't know anyone else with an iPhone?

    • -2

how much effort and expense does someone need to put into returning a found item, 1 hour, 2 hours, $10, $100.
how,far is it to the local, police station, can you even get parking outside the police station.

perhaps if people might be more generous with rewards to show gratitude there would be more incentive, how much reward would you pay someone who handed in your phone $200, $300, or nothing.

people put in some effort, when I've found wallets looked at drivers license, put into an envelope and drop in the letterbox when I pass one. my local police station is busy, I'd have to wait, and there is no parking for several blocks due to inner city living.

phone…. I'd look at the sim and drop it into the phone shop next time I pass the carrier Optus Voda or Telstra.

what is likely hood of the owner going to the police station you left the phone at ? at least the carrier has their details.
      the are many unknown factors.

if I loose a phone, I don't expect to see it again. if I did it's a bonus, but by then I probably have blocked the old sim, got a new one and a new phone. how long would people be without a phone before they replace it, you can get a cheap prepaid have your old number ported and be talking to friends about where the party is that night. people replace phones very quickly.

it's a phone….. not your grandmothers wedding ring that can't be replaced. if you have an iPhone you can probably afford another phone, if you have the $50 prepaid due to a budget, you can probably afford to replace that also. it's a phone…… and if you haven't backed up your stuff….. you will know better next time.

      • +3

perhaps if people might be more generous with rewards to show gratitude there would be more incentive, how much reward would you pay someone who handed in your phone $200, $300, or nothing.

People shouldn't have to give rewards to expect their lost property returned. What sort of person are you that you would only do something good for something in return?

    • +6

All you need to do is keep the phone charged and the owner will come looking for it.

As others have said, there are a few things you can also try and ask Siri to do.

    • +14

Wrong. The police were handed my wife's lost iPhone. It was out of charge so they charged it up, contacted Apple, then contacted her. Got it back a couple of weeks later
