Buying a Used GPU off Gumtree

I'm looking for a used gpu off gumtree and i'm wondering how i can at least avoid getting scammed or if i should buy off gumtree anyways. The buyer will most likely be in a different state and i'll have to pay for shipping.

Should i ask if the seller lists his gpu on ebay? I know that i should request an invoice and send the money via paypal..

In the event that i do get scammed , will paypal's buyer protection apply to me? I'm doing a bit of research and getting conflicting opinions.

  • Seems incredibly risky to me!
If it's a bargain, that's too good to be true, it's probably not true!

  • I am chasing a GTX670 for SLI and amazed how people will sell obviously faulty ones and for a decent price too.. would be concerned they end up getting resold on Gumtree,,

    ie:

    • No idea why it is still retaining its value if it is faulty, but it might still be usable for mining cryptocurrency if that is still viable these days. You just need to find the right coin apparently..

  • You can pretty much guarantee that any reasonably priced high end card has been on 24/7 mining cryptocurrency while it was viable. I wouldn't take the risk personally.

    • Yeah, you are right. I guess i'll wait for black friday. Thanks.

    • why would you need a graphic card to mine bitcoin? I tot it is mainly cpu and ram that does all the work…

      • From bitcoin wiki:

A CPU core can execute 4 32-bit instructions per clock (using a 128-bit SSE instruction) or 8 via AVX (256-Bit), whereas a GPU like the Radeon HD 5970 can execute 3200 32-bit instructions per clock (using its 3200 ALUs or shaders). This is a difference of 800 (or 400 in case of AVX) times more instructions per clock. As of 2011, the fastest CPUs have up to 6, 8, or 12 cores and a somewhat higher frequency clock (2000-3000 MHz vs. 725 MHz for the Radeon HD 5970), but one HD5970 is still more than five times faster than four 12-core CPUs at 2.3GHz (which would also set you back about $4700 rather than $350 for the HD5970).

        • Hmm interesting. Thanks for the article…

        • From what I know GPU's overtook CPU's quite a while ago. They perform different tasks however in the comparable tasks GPU's are bounds ahead, plus the fact it's quite easy to have multiple graphic cards in 1 machine now.

        • @KaTst3R:
They're also used for Password cracking.
          For similar reasons.

      • The architectures are different. A GPU is designed to process embarrassingly parallel problems more efficiency than a CPU.

        https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embarrassingly_parallel

Basically, if a problem can be solved by running multiple operations together as opposed to one after the other (parallel vs. procedural) then the GPU will effectively utilise its superior core count which is generally paired with a high clock speed per core beating the CPU. On the other hand, if a problem can't be separated into parallel components the CPU will dominate.

    • What so bad about 24/7 bitcoin mining? It's not like it's stressing the card to it's absolute limit, like a Furmark, is it….?

  • i wouldnt be game . it may initially seem fine, but maybe they are selling cos it fails after a few hours use for heat etc. or mining bitcoins 24hours a day for 6months straight.

I bought a used GPU on Gumtree. A hard drive too.

But I made him come to my work and it was a fair price for some older equipment… I wanted to set up a RAID 1 with the HDD and SLi the Graphics cards (I had the same stuff already).

I was able to view the hardware so it was a bit dusty.. but seemed normal. I also haggled on price, as I told him that he could pretty much leave me with dodgy equipment and there would be nothing I could do about it. So we made a deal and he turned out be legit, and I still use that 560 ti OC SLi set up today!!! (RAID 1 failed horribly though).

pay with paypal so you are covered buy paypal buyer protection.

I bought a HD 7950 for $140 delivered and it's going great from gumtree.

  • I sold my last card through Gumtree to avoid sellers fees on eBay. I'll probably end up selling off this 780GHZ soon, when I can afford an upgrade.
