Power Steering Pump Replacement cost for Honda Accord EURO 2006

Hi OZ BARGAIN,
I have a Honda Accord Euro 2006. Can you tell me how much would it cost in total to replace the Power steering pump. Mechanics has just quoted me $800 which include after market part not the original Honda Accord Euro plus Labour. Is it reasonable or is it high? I have no idea about this therefore need an advice from You.

It's Australia, tradesmen always have the privilege to rip you off, it doesn't matter a mechanic or plumber. Bottom line is, quote from several workshops and you'll know what it should cost.

    • Your are right, anything even garbage removal, killing cockcoaches or buying a bottle of water.
same brand of bottled water in a food court, a man was paying one bottle of water for $3.50 and asked for 3 cups for the kids to share, opposite stall was selling 2 bottles for $2.

  • Cricket… do a search for Honda owners forums in Aust. They would know for sure.
Also try the automotive forum on www.whirlpool.net.au
Have you called a couple of auto spares places for a price on the part only? When you know how much the part will cost you will have more of an idea of what a reasonable price would be to supply & fit.
Businesses have a lot of overheads to cover so don't expect to pay just a labor cost.
They can be easy to replace DIY .. just need to bleed afterwards, check youtube for how to's.
Some can be difficult too… :-(

  • Just a tip when asking for a quote, ask them to provide a break down, as in how much is the cost of the part, the cost and time for labour.
Also ask them if the part is New or Reconditioned. To save cost you can source a reconditioned part, which in the past has worked well for me.

  • Sounds about right.. But as suggested, get a second quote.

A quick ebay search shows an 03-05 p/s pump for $130 (keep looking for your particular model), or a a seal kit for 06-08 for $70 (if you feel up to reconditioning the pump yourself - but probably need to check if the bearing is included).. The genuine one from Honda would probably set you back around $400 - $500. No doubt you will need a gasket of some form too - probably another $20 - $30. The mechanic will charge an additional margin on this plus expedited shipping.

You'll need to take off the engine belts, dump the old power steer fluid, and depending on how things are with the car, possibly remove other bits (such as engine mount, coolant, etc). Make sure you put the belts back on at the right tension. I understand that taking off a serpentine belt requires new tension and idle bearings - but you'd better check that out if your car has one (vs a few belts hanging off the crank pulley).

You'll also need to bleed the power steering system, so factor in $30 - 50 worth of power steering fluid plus a lot of stuffing about. Like doing the brakes, having 2 people really helps this task.

Don't forget that you'll need a selection of tools, mostly sockets and spanners, but I'd suggest torque wrenches for the various ranges that you have (n.b. there was recently a cheap aldi one which is great, but only goes down to ~30nm and the pump may have bolts requiring 7 - 10nm if it's made of aluminum). Don't get under your car if it's only held up by a jack.. Axle stands are mandatory.

All in all, I'd say about a half day if you're fairly familiar with things or a full day if you're not conversant on Honda engines. Plus another half day if you decide to recondition your pump rather than buy a new one.
