  • do they expire?

You basically get issued a exchange order in Australia, which you exchange for the actual JR pass once you are in Japan.
The exchange order expires 3 months after it is issued.

lol….you only save $6.99 postage from this deal.
Or you can buy it from JTB and pick it up from their office in Sydney. JTB usually offer the same price as this site.

          @stan86:

          I guess, ha.

Just liked the idea of having the pass ready so it's one less thing to worry about.

  • Can I use the pass inside Tokyo CBD? Or is just for moving between cities

    • Only for the JR lines in Tokyo

    • +3

JR pass can be used on all (if not, then most) JR lines. you can even catch a bullet train with it to go to osaka, kyoto etc. You can't catch the super express though (nozomi) but its still fast. You'll get from tokyo to osaka in 3 hours flat, whereas nozomi = around 2 hours and 30 minutes.

It costs around 380 ish for a 7 day jrail pass and a return trip from osaka to tokyo (or other way round) on the nozomi is just shy of 30000 yen (reserve seat). Basically, if you go plan to travel around cities, this would be good. If you're thinking of sticking to one city, its a lot cheaper just to get a rail card (pasmo or suika card) which is very easy to get. Just go to any of the ticket machines and buy one (you can change the menu to english).

You can also reserve a seat using the JR pass without costing you more. There are reserve seat carriages and non reserve carriages and with the non reserve seats, you gotta line up and hope for the best lol.

So with the JR lines within tokyo, you can go around on the yamanote line (its green) which goes to places like ueno, shinjuku, harajuku, ikebukuro (where the pokemon centre, namja town, jworld and aquarium is… i think its called the sunshine city or something along those lines).

Then you have the subway which goes to more specific places but you cannot use the JR pass with that.

If you want more info on places and recommendations (ive been 5 times and going for a 6th in feb lol), then just PM me and i'll try to help best i can :)

Sorry to go a bit off topic =P

    • Not really worth since most of Tokyo you'll end up using the subway, which isn't covered by JR pass.

If you're travelling between cities then it is usually worth it. Most people try to plan it so they can get the shortest version of the pass possible, and activate it when the time is right.

    • I honestly think it's better to just get an overnight bus which costs around 12000 yen return to get to Osaka/Kyoto from Tokyo. Though you can probably get it cheaper since I'm travelling during peak times.

  • NTA(Japanese big travel company not in Australia thought) always offer free shipping.
I bought from JTB last time and I paid $7 for shipping.
