Thin Laptop Good for Reading and Coding

Hi Guys,

I have been using a 13" Mac Book Pro for the last 6 years, and it seems time to upgrade.

I am thinking about Mac Book Air, mainly because my understanding of computer hardware is quite limited.

I mainly look for something that is easy to carry around, good for reading stuff and coding (not very small screen size, 13" or more), decent battery life etc.

I do not need a gaming laptop but I do sometimes run programs that crunch not-so-small data sets.

I should be able to get education prices and also salary packaging, so I am not that worried about the price.

Thanks.

I'd suggest a higher spec i5/i7 Surface Pro 4 but the screen is only 12.1" (albeit with an huge 2736x1824 resolution with 267 PPI). Amazing little machines :)

Get a Surface Pro 4. They're pretty beefy considering their size.

I should check one of the Surface Pro on display.

I use linux at work. My initial plan was if I gut a windows desktop to install linux. Not sure how good if I do that for a Surface Pro. There is also the option to run linux on VM.

MBP with retina is also a good choice. May be the new MBPs are light than the one I use (from 6 years ago).

Just get anything with an Intel Skylake processor. These Macbooks still don't have 6th generation Intel processors and even the flagship MBP is still using a 4th Generation Haswell processor. That's nearly $4000 on a Haswell laptop. >.>

      • Hey thanks. That's seems like good point.

Get a new Macbook Pro with a retina display.

Order it from the apple online store with 16GB of RAM and it'll last another 5 years.

What disto of linux are you using?

    • My work desktop runs Ubuntu (I am not a *nix expert, though I wish I know a bit more.)

      • May I ask what your job is? Do you need linux at home/on the go?

I still think you should get the Retina Macbook Pro. It's a mac, it is what you already have - you don't want to go to windows

The only thing I'd suggest is possibly waiting till next year when new processors will be available.

        • I work as a scientific/statistical programmer. It is a cool and relax job.

I am thinking about working on my laptop away from my desk since it is a bit boring to go there every day of the week. I also want to find a some free lance jobs on the side if I can - to improve my skills and some extra earning.

Still, I really don't have to have linux on my laptop. May be I just want to feel cool :)

My default position was to buy a Retina MBP.

This also says to wait till next year to get a MBP
