Ozbargain Meetup Group, will it continue?

Hola Amigos!

I'm sure there are some of you who have been to one of the Ozbargain meetups, organised on the Meetup app / site. I went to the arcade game one at the end of 2013, and I still remember vividly how quickly cheapskates can eat free pizza!

I'm now getting notifications from Meetup that the group no longer has an admin, and because of that it will cease to exist if no-one steps up in the next week or so.

I just wanted to see if there was still interest in the group and any future meetups organised through Ozbargain. It was a fun night, and even though I'm not super active on the site it was nice to put names to some faces.

If there is enough interest, would anyone be willing to step up to the Admin plate?

Happy Ozbargaining!

The issue isn't not wanting meetups, its just not using the Meetup.com system which costs money. We're cheapskates!

    • Ah Ok, had no idea that Meetup took a slice of the action. That's a shame, but hopefully we can continue in another way.

  • Facebook? as another option?

    • The reason we used Meetup was for the ability to be RSVP to an event via paying $5 otherwise it becomes a cumbersome process. We couldn't find any sites that could do that other than ticketing websites. Eventbright might be useful for the next event.

      • Point taken, yes that would be a difficult service to replace, esp since they all want to charge for it.

        • Eventbite or try booking could be an alternative.

    Wait, there was free pizza?!

    • Well, technically everyone paid $5 for pizza, soft drinks and video games. For Ozbargainers I think that makes it even worse because everyone wanted to make sure they got their $5 worth!

Wonder what the real life OzBargainer demographic were

    • just have a look at their facebook likes and you can get an idea

      100% pizza eaters.

  • Can we get a sponsor to pay for the meetup system fee? A cashback website maybe?

Neil maybe you can make a creative competition where people pitch ideas for the biggest ozbargain meetup, with the winner judged by you as the best or most promising idea.

    • It's not that OzBargain doesn't have the money to pay for Meetup.com, its just we don't need use of that website. If there is a future OzBargain event we will use an alternative method.

All that is the easy part. Finding an appropriate venue and gathering enough interested people is the tough part.

  • Meetup.com have ever escalating price ($116 back in April, partly due to weak AUD) and it charges our account every 6 months even though we have not used it other than organising our first Melbourne meetup. It's mainly my fault — nothing got organised and I should have closed that account long ago, always busy and somehow it got slipped through.

Anyway as Neil has said, we'll figure out how we can organise meetups in other ways. I actually met quite a few OzBargainers this year via different meetups & presentations. If you guys are really curious about real life OzBargain demographic, then feel free to organise one yourself. Don't wait for the "official" one.

  • What is the site?

If you know someone whose an organizer for another site on there you can have it for free. There's a maximum of 3 sites you can run per subscription.
