Outdoor Security Cameras (at Least 720p) - Good Night Vision & Able to Be Setup as Standalone IP Cams (Preferably)

Hi guys!

I thought it might be best to leave this one up to all you brilliant Ozbargainers (if you can't find the best deal, no one can!).

I'm after 4 to 6 (depends on price) outdoor rated security cameras (they can either be purchased as a set or individually) that meet the following requirements:

-at least 720p HD
-rated for outdoor usage
-good night vision (e.g. can read a number plate or ID a face)
-IP camera (i.e. ethernet, not BNC or similar) - I'd like the flexibility to use a cloud only recording service later (i.e. unhook them from the recorder unit)
-an included central recording/control unit OR the ability to add local recording WITHOUT a PC running the whole time (doesn't have to come with a HDD included - I have plenty)

And I'd PREFER:

-Wireless (or wired is fine as long as I'm able to run PoE to them, or plug into a powerpoint in the roof or similar)
-a known brand (well, it just has to be known to be a good quality product, not something really cheap and nasty etc). I'd prefer to pay a little extra for decent quality - but a good deal!

I'm planning on working with somewhere between $400 - $600 (I know it's a bit of a range, but I am willing to stretch it out a little to get something great).

I'm open to suggestions here - who thinks I'm best off getting IP cams and setting up my own recorder system (or should I go down the path of a centrally recorded unit that runs BNC cables or similar?)

I could be well and truly out of my price range - I'm not sure :)

Thanks so much everyone!

Cheers,

Scottie

  • My personal preference is Foscam - you can get them from foscamaustralia.com.au for only a couple of bucks more than eBay resellers, and you get a decent warranty. Hikvision and Dahua are both very price competitive too.

Ubiquiti are great quality but you're tied in to their system - I'd consider them if I had to deploy IP phones and network switches as well, as their whole system ties in well. Otherwise I'd leave them off the list.
