What Does This Email Mean? [SOLVED]

hi,
got an email to attend an interview for a job as:
blah blah..

Can you please complete and return the attached forms to me by Monday by COB.

Please also email a copy of your passport/drivers licence or birth certificate.

my actual interview isn't on Monday but on Friday, I tried to give hr a call but she didn't picked up.
Do I have to print the forms, fill, sign, scan and then email 'em to her or print and fill it in and hand it in to her?

made me confused..

  • My gut instinct would be to never send this type of personal information by email.

It sounds a little bit like an email scam I've heard of. Is the interview a genuine offer from a company which you've dealt with before?

I'd speak to a representative from the company before I did anything.

These are just my personal views. It's up to you to decide what to do.

    • not a scam, had a phone interview with them few days ago, so genuine.

Thanks for clarifying that. I'd still be careful about how and when I passed on the information. Good luck getting through to someone at the company.

So was this a company you applied to a …. bricks and mortar company ie:not an online job application you got in an email ?

Edit : i would only show my passport in a person to person interview.

  • First of all: have they offered you the job or just asked you to attend an interview? AFAIK most businesses would not ask for a copy of your passport/birth certificate/drivers license until they have offered you the role. I would be wary of providing this information if you are not 100% sure it's legitimate. I understand you have had a phone interview, but that is easy to dupe.

Can you please complete and return the attached forms to me by Monday by COB

Complete the attached forms (print, fill out, scan, send or fill out on computer, send) and return by Monday 5:30pm (or whenever close of business is)

Please also email a copy of your passport/drivers licence or birth certificate.

To check you have the right to work in Australia/prove you are a citizen etc.

Passport doesn't prove you have a right to work. The Visa inside your non australian passport proves this. These documents simply prove you are who you are, although the Birth certificate proves very little as it has no photo.

Yes. The Visa. Inside your passport. Not everyone has a passport. Or a foreign passport. An Australian passport holder can prove they have the right to work with their passport, no visa needed. License alone does not give away the status of working rights or citizenship, this is why they ask for a passport (domestic, thus with working rights or foreign with a VISA) or a birth certificate (AUS citizen, therefore has right to work) as well as the license.

    HUH ???

    1) Not every australian has a passport. CORRECT.

    2) Passport doesn't prove you have a right to work. The Visa inside your non australian passport proves this. CORRECT

    3) An Australian passport holder can prove they have the right to work with their passport, no visa needed. - PARTIALLY TRUE.
Not every Australian has a passport.

    4) License alone does not give away the status of working rights or citizenship - CORRECT

    5) …as well as the license. - INCORRECT - Not everyone has a drivers license.

    6) OP says: "Please also email a copy of your passport/drivers licence or birth certificate." SO they want passport/driverslicense OR birth certificate. Does the / mean and in this situation? What if I am an Aussie with no Passport or Drivers License?

    7) Why don't they contact Dept Immigration or whatever they call themselves now and within 24 hours they will come back with a answer to the 'right to work' question for a specific person. When I was doing this if they found no record of the person, then they assumed the person was Aussie and therefore had a right to work.

If you expect employers to check your working status for you, instead of you providing it for them, no one is going to hire you. I am an Australian citizen and I have provided these documents to be copied many times for employers after receiving contracts.

The problem is that a birth certificate alone does not prove anything - as essentially it could be anyone's birth certificate. How do they prove you are who you say you are? They need photo identification that matches you with your birth certificate (thus proving your citizenship and working rights). No drivers license, no birth certificate? Proof of age card. No proof of age card? How are you even living in our society… but apparently photo I.D from a tertiary institution.

      Here is some info: http://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/professional-drivers/licenceā€¦

Notice that "Secondary Documents - Must have a photograph and a name".

      PS.

When I was doing this if they found no record of the person, then they assumed the person was Aussie and therefore had a right to work.

Say, WHAT?! If they have no record of a right to work, they assume they have the right to work? No. Are you trollin'?
