Choosing Days for Part-Timer

Hi guys,

So I've recently been offered a part-time office role, 3 days a week. I have the option to choose which 3 days out of the 5 to work. Any good suggestions on the days - and the reasons behind it, would be much appreciated.

    Tues-Thurs

So you can have a long weekend.

Mon-Wed. So you get all the Monday public holidays off with pay.

This would partly depend on which year it is - for example this year its actually quite close and M-W would only have maybe 2 more than W-F (I usually work this out for my mum each year as she also works part time).

For example, this year there were 5 public holidays M-W and 4 W-F

      Other points to consider:
      - I'd probably do T-T or W-F as its the best feeling not having to get up for work on a Monday (especially when everyone else is)
      - Fridays are usually quite the bludge so good to be at work that day

      • Public holidays also differ from state to state. Plus there can be regional show holidays. Apparently OP is in Sydney so they may have more public holidays on Monday compared to Melbourne. By my count in 2015 NSW has 6 on Monday* and 2 on Friday. In 2016 NSW has 6 on Monday*, 2 on Tuesday and 2 on Friday.

        *Includes the Bank Holiday.

    • If they are a part-timer and it's a public holiday, isn't the employer allowed to change the roster for that week so the employee would work on a business day?

  • Mon to Weds is probably best as you get everything out of the way at the start of the week, assuming those you help out are busy. But sometimes have thought Weds-Fri is a good option so when you go out to dinner/work functions on the Friday night and you're already out!

    fri and mon
    cause for the year coming
    - cause Christmas day is fri
    - new years day fri
    - good fri
    - boxing day mon
    - easter Monday
    - Anzac day mon
    - queen birthday mon
    - lab day mon (nsw)
    - aus day mon

so u can pick any other day inbetween

    • Sorry but I don't see how Christmas Day is on Friday and then Boxing Day is on a Monday.

      • This year Boxing Day is a Saturday so the actual public holiday is the Monday.

    Mon , Wed , Fri.
Long weekend if any public holiday either side of weekend and break in between the week for any other important work.

I did Mon/Wed/Fri when I started a new part-time job several years ago and absolutely HATED it. I could never properly relax on my days off as it was always in the back of my mind that I would be back at work the next day and also that I would have to get up revoltingly early again (I start work at 5.45am). I'm in an office job and found the one day on/one day off thing was really disruptive to my workload as well - a lot of the stuff we work on is quite complex and if something like that came in during the afternoon, I couldn't finish it off the next morning, I had to leave it waiting until the day after which didn't help with meeting KPIs and getting a decent "flow" of work through. I was hugely relieved when I got the opportunity to work Mon/Tues/Wed instead so I could get all my work days over and done with and then relax for a REALLY long weekend :) .

  • You can go for the 'Free' holidays or the convenience of having a long long weekend.
Personally I'd go down the middle and choose mon, tue, wed if I had a choice.

  • Are they able to be flexible?

When I was working part-time I would let them know the week before what days I was going to work the following week. It was a great way to work around other commitments.

    • Provided they are willing to pay you for every public holiday then this is the best scenario. However it would be a bit of cheek to ask to work every public holiday meaning you have it off.

      • I had public holidays off (unpaid), I would arrange my days off either side of this for a very long weekend.

  • I work Mon-Wed 8.5 hour days. Tried Wed-Fri, but that did not work so well because the full timers were winding down of a Friday. It is much more productive to be in at the beginning of the week,

    • Agreed. So it depends on OP's attitude towards this job.
      1. work, go home and get paid for foreseeable future only
      2. keen to learn and progress as career.
if answer is 1, pick the easiest day and less work load, ie wed to fri.
if answer is 2, pick mon to wed.
If answer is 1 or 2, work tues to thursday.,

  • Thanks everyone for your comments! After reading, say if your work day falls on a public holiday, would the employer ask you to change that day to another day?

    • No, I'm not asked to change. if one of my work days falls on a public holiday, I get the day off and am paid for it, the same as the full-time employees.
