In my day if you broke something you either fixed it yourself or learned to be more careful in the future. Skills for life are the ultimate bargain.

      Ah, yes.

And in those days a pair of headphones cost how much?

These take 18.2 minutes of minimum wage work to buy.

Sometimes finding or fixing headphones will take longer.

But they take 0 mins of minimum wage to take care of and not break. It's good to have disposable things, but it's also good to learn to not break the things you have.

          Cognitive effort does have costs.

I'm a long time repairer, but even I learnt the valuable life skill of investing time & effort only when there is reasonable reward (be that monetary or satisfaction in a job well done, etc).

Naturally, children will lose things, so the cost of these against the vigilance of the parent to ensure they are not lost… it's probably worth having a spare pair.

      • Obviously I'm not suggesting that you need to break out the soldering iron for $3.50 headphones, but the benefit of giving a pair to a kid and saying "these are all yours and no one else's, take care of them" will bild a long term association that belongings are to be cared for rather than abused and thrown away. Thanks for the downvote and sarcasm though.

        • Well it's totally off topic, so collapsed so others can post about the deal. Maybe worthy of discussion in a forum elsewhere.

Sarcasm? Well I did restrain myself from saying
          Okay Grandpa… ;-)

It's not that I disagree with your thoughts, but in generally time-poor parenthood, it is probably not worth the effort for $3.50, or a $1 Woolies hub headphones.

It's knowing where to put the effort in. A parenting survival tip & valuable life skill.

"break out the soldering iron" - my trusty old Weller temperature controlled soldering iron is always ready for the next job.
