1-5 cm you wont need a chainsaw.

We have a Bosch Keo that does those thicknesses without any problem. I'm pretty obsessed with it, I cut trees ALL the time and even drive it over to my mums and cut her trees LOL!!

We just bought it from Bunnings, not sure if it is still sold there.

    • Quite right, and the cheaper Ozito 12v lithium-ion cordless pruning saw at Bunnings is also very effective. Mine was $49 3 months ago and it trims branches off my mandarin tree.

  • What sort of plants are they? Unless they are very hard and woody I think the chainsaw is a bit overkill too. Have you considered a machete or cane knife instead? It's very quick and effortless for plants of that girth.

  • for anything that small I think chainsaw is overkill unless you have lots and lots. Chainsaws are difficult to use properly and safely and require careful fueling.

I have a machete which works well for that size, and a set of long handled ratchet type shears/loppers which work well as well, without the possibility of chopping off a leg or something.
Without making a specific recommendation, here is what I mean:

Swinging a machete can be interesting, I was cleaning up some regrowth of hardwood trees and was chopping through 30-50mm stuff with a 450mm long sharpened high carbon steel machete, and it was hard going. I also fell over a bit too, so be aware if you are not used to swinging stuff around.

1 to 5 cm max -> get a sickle saw from bunnings. Good ones are around $25.

As a person who uses chainsaws a lot, a chainsaw for this would be overkill, and possibly dangerous.

If you must have a chainsaw, consider the 12v ryobi 1.
Its a bit of a toy (Compared to petrol), but I find it will get the smaller jobs done, and only needs bar oil.

IF you get a chainsaw - remember that to keep it cutting you need to sharpen the chain, regularly!

  • I too use a chainsaw quite a lot but i use a simple bow saw for the light stuff.very quick and simple
