I would say no for the reason you just stated.
100% no. i've fried one of these USBs after watching a movie off it ~90mins. definitely for copying files only
Had it stable in my Raspberry pi 2 for around a month now as the root filesystem..
hmm interesting….
I'm considering using it on a Asus RT-AC87U, USB 3.0 port is awkwardly placed on the front of the unit under a flap and this stick would perfectly hide in there.
raspberry pi port is usb 2.0, I also use it to record/watch tv, not sure why people report frying sticks? perhaps luck of the draw?
I've bought a few of these from shopping express and a few from MSY.
2 out of the 3 I bought from shopping express were fine. 1 of them overheated when plugged into either a laptop or PC or router. SO much so that the data on the 16GB drive became corrupted. I returned it successfully for a refund. All of the other drives have worked flawlessly. I have had one stuck in my Asus RT-AC68 router (running Merlin firmware) for months now, and it's working fine.
I mentioned words to this effect in another thread a week or so ago, and was going to buy some then, but bought some sandisk extreme USB 3 sticks instead. Unfortunately they're not great for me as some computers don't like booting from them - which is what I originally wanted to use them for - for booting up and imaging PCs. Annoying as they're super fast flash drives, but something to do with the way they work - some specification they adhere to - stops them from booting certain PCs/laptops.
I'm going to buy a few of these 32GB ones for now… until I find something else to use instead. Thanks.
The gist is… I'd say the overheating ones are faulty, and should be returned for a refund or replacement.
As root I would imagine that there is little in the way of write and read going on unless you were using it for video data recording.

Back in stock, just bought. Thanks OP
Would this be suitable for running 24/7 plugged into a router?
I've heard some review the usb stick heat up a lot?
