Car Insurance Regular Driver

Hey Guys,

Hunted down my car and have to sort out my insurance. At the moment looking with budget direct but free to change if anyone has any better recommendations. I'm under 25/m so are going to get slaughtered. I'm thinking of putting my insurance under my parents name to save money but wondering if they can refuse to pay me out or whatever if they find out that i'm the "regular driver" of the car and not my parents.

Cheers

  • NRMA actually encourages the act. You don't even need to nominate yourself. That is how I pay $260 a year for comprehensive. ($20k car, 19 year old)

  • +1

My daughter (17) just got a car and the insurance is in my name. She pays it monthly and it just comes off our credit card monthly. The suncorp lady said not to change it when she turns 18 and to just leave it like that. Said there will be an excess because she was driving but that is way less that the cost of insurance for an 18 year old.

  • Regarding the insurance companies, I would recommend one that allows a choice of repairer with no fees or hassles in doing so.

  • Just got off the phone to AAMI and even though my parents have 18 year no claim discount with them they don't offer any no claim bonus when starting a new policy which was pretty surprising since every other company does.

  • Try Coles Car Insuranc. I have been with them for two years, and am happy with their service. Their rates are far cheaper. Last year someone banged and damaged my car, Coles provided excellent service for me to get my car repaired and a free car also provided during repairing period.

  • I tried coles and got quoted 1700 where i got quoted 688 with budget direct and 998 with aami. Don't think i put anything in wrong.

    • They can vary so much, many years ago i did quite a few quotes, aami etc quoted $1200, GIO etc quoted $2500, Youi quoted 5k, think i was around 22 at the time, no accidents. The older i got the cheaper it got.

Think i ended up going with a budget insurer for the first few years, think i used Aami in the end, as it got cheaper, i went over to NRMA, because they allow you to choose your repairer and it wasnt too much more.

      • Also dont make the mistake of staying with whoever you choose after the year without atleast getting another online quote. Quite often a brand new quote is cheaper than renewing with them, so better off cancelling and signing up again, so much for loyalty!

        • I've checked out about 10 insurers and cheapest i've found is budget direct at $688, QBE is only 750. Thinking i might go with QBE since they're quite bigger and $60 more isn't too much. Anyone ever been with them?

  • Most providers encourage this.

When I got my license my family's provider said not to bother listing me because it will be so expensive.

I wouldn't trust the budget insurers as they may require a upfront excess if you are at fault or not

  • Hmm is it worth listing me as a regular driver at all? If i don't then its about $400 less. The excess for unlisted driver is $500. Can they refuse to pay it out or anything if they find out im regular?

    Cheers
